Ok, I'm getting frustrated with todays handgun offerings. I've been looking for a S&W 396, either NG or MG for quite a while now and can't find many for sale without prices that are too high. Now don't get me wrong, I don't expect to pay peanuts for one but $1200-$1300 is a little out in left field when I do see one for sale. I picked up a new Bulldog yesterday to use while continuing my search but I could have built a better revolver with a hacksaw and files after comsuming a gallon of moonshine. So, my question is: Where do I look for a 396? I scour Guns America, Armslist, and Guns International every day. I gave up on gunbroker after they took my monthly payment for months without actually opening an account. thanks in advance for any insight.

Keep checking on the smith & Wesson forums for sale section.

Skip the big gun classifieds and auction sites and put up a want ad on the S&W forum or elsewhere.

Gave up on the 396 and ordered a Talo 2.75" Redhawk. I'll come up with a holster that will work for it.

Thats the going price when you consider I just saw the last new 392 NG sale at a Local Gander Mountain for $1080 before tax. The current asking prices are fair. The thing is, there is a guy in Florida who buys up darn near every one of them. I've sold three 392NG's over the last year for over $1200, and one 396NG.
Expensive hobby

Wow, they've jumped up in price since I first had an interest in them. At least now I can sit back and wait for a deal.

You'll find a deal sooner or later. I sold mine because the 3" worked better for me in the Mountain Lite.
I'm keeping my eyes on any variants of the model 69 though

How much is a little money worth to you? You can wait for the "deal" for a long time or you could just buy it and start enjoying it NOW.

Thunderjet, I can wait for a good deal. Just got a 2.75" Redhawk and witing for the buldog to come back so I can sell it. Someone sent me a holster design that conceals an Alaskan well so I'll see how that goes until a 396 comes along.

There out there. Picked up one last year that had had some jeweling done on the internals, hammer and trigger for less than $800 iirc. Was planning on some mods so it worked out well. Just have to be aggressive searching and quick when they come up. Before After

I wasn't having any luck finding one so I bought a 2 3/4" Talo Redhawk. After talking to the vp of charter arms and having him tell me there was nothing wrong with my revolver I opted for a refund. The ReRedhawk is now my daily carry and conceals well.
