I learned of this on this forum. Marlin overbores their .44 magnum barrels.
1. What is the purpose of this?
2. Will the marlin .44 magnum shoot .429 bullets (jacketed) accurately? I've never shot one.
These questions may bring up some more but it is a start. Thanks

The reloaders slug their bores. If you shoot factory ammo, you might have to go through a pile of different ammo to find the brand your rifle likes, especially the 44!
Then, after you find the ammo it likes, you need to be able to find that flavor on the shelf more than once every three years.
Mine shoots 225gr Leverevolution accurately. Even with the shelf price being a little higher dollar than SOME others, its almost always on the shelf. I find it on sale on a fairly regular basis which makes it tolerable.
Marlin also uses 1-38" twist. I can't say my Ruger 77/44 is any more accurate than my 1894 with 225gr Hornady, but I can say that 1-20" twist of the Ruger shoots everything else better.
More tid-bits I've found for the "44" believe it or not category are:
At close range (-25yards) with a handgun, Black Hills 210gr Cowboy ammunition kills animals as good as anything in 44 special or magnum in my opinion. I think its that flat nose.
Within 75 yards, the 255 gr Keith 44 Specials work darn well in the rifle

It's not a Marlin thing, It's an SAAMI thing. 44 mag handguns are .429 and 44 mag rifles are .431. I size my Ranch Dog 265 gr bullets to .433. They shoot well out of my Ruger Super Blackhawk also.

I've found Hornady's jacketed bullets to work fine. The 240gr HP XTP is quickly proving itself to me and friends. For larger critters maybe try their 265gr SP or the 300gr HP XTP. Of jacketed bullets, they also seem the easiest to find for me, here. If you are a reloader, BEWARE the leverlution bullets and loads. They come with shorter brass which will mess you up when reloading, they require shorter brass to function, which will mess you up if you've bought the bullets alone.

Over on Marlin forums you'll find a whole. Sub section on the 1894's. I have found the Winchester white box, 240gr, shoots great and is not too hard on the wallet.
