The wifey and I were at a friends house the other night for dinner. He’s facing some health/financial challenges. I was tired and ready to go home, as we were headed out the door he says…”Hey, I’ve got a couple pistols for sale” I stop dead in my tracks and perk up, he says… “just look at em real quick before you leave”… the wifey gives me the look and reminds me of how tired I was just moments before… “just a minute hunny” I say….
He goes down the hall and comes out with a plastic case with…
A Colt Three-Fifty-Seven 6” with Service grips that are nice. Bluing is very worn from barrel and cylinder and part of frame. Didn’t notice any rust, gouges, etc. Looks like a lot of holster wear. No box
and
A Model 27-2 8 3/8 with pachmeyer grips. Bluing is very good to excellent. Action and is sweet. He thinks he has the cardboard box and maybe the original grips. Nice, nice gun.
Having our coats on ready to leave, wifey tapping her foot, I didn’t give them a good looking over like bore inspection, timing, etc. Basically I just picked them up and saw what they were. Came home and did some research.
I’ve talked with him again and he swears the 27-2 does not have recessed chambers. I remember for sure the barrel is pinned which means it could be a transition gun but the serial number is N446xxx which I think puts it about mid seventies. Maybe it was sent back to S&W at some point and the cylinder was replaced. I need to go look at it again. I think it has the Target hammer. I remember it being wide.
Anyway, he want’s 500 each. arggg…. I don’t know that I can or want to fork out 1000 bucks now since I still owe that much or a little more to Gallager for my 500L that should be done anytime. But, I could fork out 500 for one of these.
Part of me would like to buy the Colt since it appears they only made about 15000 of them and it’s basically a Pre-Python. Plus I have a Det. SpL of the same vintage. They’d make a nice “50’s” pair. Service and backup guns. I think $500 for it’s condition might be a little high. It might be a good one to send back to Colt for a refinish, action tune, etc.
but,…
The Smith is just plain nice. If he could eventually find the box and original grips $500 bucks is a great deal. I think that even without the box and original grips it’s probably worth closer to 750.
It seems the best deal would be to buy both of them for 1000. A couple classic 357’s.
But, if you could only have one for 500 which one you choose and why?
