I like the more true in-between .40 cal. compared to .357 or .44 (which is really a .43). I have a .401 Herter's and truly like the ctg. The .41 Magnum is too close to the .44 but I like it too. I send David my GP and in right at 1-year, a $84 return shipping fee on top of the $625 package, I got my nicely bead blasted refinish gun. The only marking changes were the removal of the .357 Magnum and a simple "10mm" and the CCG logo very small stamping. The rear of the cylinder receives extensive machining for the moon clip clearance as you can see from the small remaining toolmarks on the cylinder pawl gear/ejector. The ejector star looks thin but seems very robust and should not bend. David does use the .357 cylinder re-bored as is the barrels done by a second party (probably the same guy Bowen uses). David does re-set the barrel and cylinder gap too. He offers an action job and can tighten things up at an additional charge but I didn't need that.
Cylinder thickness is about 0.055" but bolt cuts are offset. Chambers are nicely chamfered too. David suggested jacketed bullets for best performance and I mic the throats of chambers at around 0.400". Will get out pin gauges later. It can be adjusted to 0.401-.4015 if needed. That should fix any cast shooting issues if they do arise. I have a great Todd Corder designed 200 and 235 gr. FPGC mould in .401 cal. David said he tested the revolver with factory 180 gr. 10mm at 1200 fps. If you notice he offers this conversion in .41 Special and 10mm std. only. I know you'd be tempted to try maybe a 10mm Magnum which is literally the 1.25" long rimless version of a .401 Herters. Rugers are tough but why punish the platform? I think any hot factory ammo or that level load would be fine for a long time. A full house high pressure 10mm Magnum maybe not so much. For me that would allow maybe 100 more fps at the same 10mm pressure but in the longer more capacious Magnum cases. Of course it would even thin still be fine for .40 S&W and std. 10mm to. It is tempting.
Clements supplies a taller looking front sight that is 0.318" tall but in my kit I had a Marbles fiber optic Redhawk front for a .454 that is 0.330" and I can see it, worked fine. The Redhawk and Super RH sights all interchange with the GP as well as the Super RH grip. As far as accuracy I only ran one cylinder full through it with .40 S&W just to quickly see. The 180 gr. JHP .40 went right at 1050 fps and while my first three shot group at 33 yds. was pretty good the second three were under an inch. It's been a while since I shot the gun but that shows it will really shoot! The .40 Recoil felt more like a .38 to me, maybe more pushy. Perfectly mimic's the Colt SSA in .38-40 and that is a good thing. It feels lighter than I remembered and it is! It weighs 2-1/4 oz. less than it did as a .357! I weighed it, lol.
I am pleased with the work Clements completed. It shows much design consideration and very high quality workmanship. His communication over the year has been professional and prompt. I'd sure do more business with him, no hesitation. Just sort of a review of my experience, it was positive. In all valuing the original gun at $500 used (I think about $750 retail), shipping both ways and all I figure I have about $1225 in it total. Not bad for a true custom. Now I guess Ruger will come out with their own!
