I've been hunting with a .444 Marlin T/C Contender for a few years now and really like the cartridge. Even in a 14" pistol barrel I can shoot three shot groups around 1/2 to 1" at 100 yards. I figured if it is that accurate in a pistol at that range, I'd like to try it in a rifle. I have been looking for a bargain on a Marlin 444 for a while, but prices have gone through the roof. I'm sure you can still find them in local shops, but there aren't many around me and on gunbroker the pre-Freedom Group Marlins are going for $1400-$1800. Ridiculous! While searching I found this NIB Winchester built on their Big Bore 94 for well under $700 shipped to my FFL. My goal is to track down a wood stock for it now. The Winchester Timber Carbines almost all came with great looking stocks, but I haven't had any luck locating one of those take-offs.

You're not going to shoot it 'till you restock it? How can you resist? As is it has a serious, purposeful look about it. Maybe the rifle your guide carries as you stalk Old Ephraim.

Do you know if this is an early model or later model Black Shadow? The first few made were 1/12 twist. Later ones had the 1/20. To check, push a tight fitting patch down the barrel and mark the cleaning rod at the start and finish of a complete rotation. Measure between the marks.

Those rifles are very nice. One of the nicest features is no Micro Groove!!!
Thumper: You got a steal on your rifle! I don't know why they would even dream of putting a plastic, excuse me, I think they say polymer, stock on such a nice rifle. I would'a bought it anyway for sure. Good buy!
Okie44, question for you and Thumper. These are Winchester rifles. I kind'd have alway thought Winchester levers didn't have a way to mount a scope on them. One reason I've shyed away from them. Okie44's has a nice set of mounts on his rifle. Is that a factory drill and tap, or was that something you had a gunsmith do? I like it.

Winchester introduced the Angle Eject (AE) model in '83 factory drilled for scope mounts.

Like okie44 said, they're factory drilled and tapped. I've never had any trouble getting mounts on a 94, I just have thus far always decided to go back to iron sights. I really want to put a low power, small scope on this one, though.
