What is supposed to be the advantage of a micro-grooved barrel anyway?
I have a marlin and have good luck with cast out of it, 30-30, (shot a deer yesterday) but it is picky about it. I guess if I wanted a reg. barrel, could have bought the rossi.

It cost less to manufacture was the main advantage. All gun manufacturers come up with new fangled design changes to dazzle the public. Behind it all is usually a cheaper way to manufacture. Microgroove barrels gave you twelve grooves as opposed to six with the Ballard. The explanation to the public was more grooves to grip the bullet. They worked fine. At the time the popular belief was cast bullets were on their way out and jacketed bullets were the future. The main reason microgroove barrels got the reputation for not shooting cast bullets well was more the ignorance of the loader than the fault of the barrel. If one slugs his barrel and feeds it the proper size cast bullet everything comes out fine. Put undersized cast bullet through a dirty microgroove barrel or use a very heavy for the caliber bullet in a slow twist microgroove barrel and you get poor results. The microgroove got a bum rap from shooters who didn't know what they were doing. In some applications the microgroove design works better than the Ballard, thus it has a following from knowledgeable hand loaders that prefer it for those circumstances.

I just read the above post and apologize to anyone I gave the impression I was referring to anyone other then myself. Others have no way of knowing I had myself in mind when referring to "the ignorance of loaders" and "shooters who didn't know what they were doing." It took me a long time to learn how to feed a microgroove barrel correctly. Once I learned how to load for a microgroove, my issues with them went away and I no longer see them as mysterious or inferior.

jgt, You Pompous Prick! Your first response was dead on and a great explanation! You didn't come across at all as insulting with me. Love my Marlins and cast!

Ha!HA! Thanks Jeff. When I write stuff I don't take into consideration it is the internet and people can't here my voice nor do they know me. So rereading a post sometimes has me scrambling for the edit button.

I know! A lot of mis interpretations occur on this internet without any intention of doing so by the poster.
