this is what I consider my #4 30-06... it was my FIL's rifle, but not something he shot often, or ever, that I ever saw... the wood is incredible, however it looks like it was inletted by an amateur, glass bedding used to fill pretty large gaps... over all it looks "OK" at a close distance, & looks awesome from 30 ft... it originally had a Unertl scope on it, that I robbed for a Remington Rolling block... since it's my #4 30-06 I could part with it, though MRS would be disappointed... I could leave it sit on the rack, as a safe queen, but it's really not matching the workmanship of many guns I actually shoot... I'm already saving a Remington Woodsman carbine in 30-06, that was FIL's main deer hunting gun... which sadly I don't shoot much either... that one is not near as pretty on the wall as this birds eye maple piece I thought about turning it back to it's original milsurp layout, but not sure if I could find all the needed parts... & then what do you do with the wood ( which is unique enough, that it's how MRS would notice that it was missing... anyway... open for suggestions... how it used to sit, before I stole the Unertl for my "roller" looks pretty nice from a distance???

I'd have it rebored to 35 Whelen and bedded into a Boyd's Sporter stock. Fit it with a receiver sight and you're good to go.

Thanks for the suggestion... however I already have a 35 Whelen in a nice 700 BDL... & this '06 didn't shoot too bad...

What a beautiful piece of wood. With the Unertl it reminds me of the classic old varmint rifles. If it were mine I would have a hard time not rebarreling it to a 220 Swift or 225 Winchester.

that's also a great suggestion... a heavier barrel would get rid of a bunch of the poor inletting & glass bedding... & IMO, the barrel is way too light ( sporter weight ) looks out of place with the Unertl... as mentioned the Unertl is on a different rifle now... but a more modern varmint scope could replace it... BTW... the Unertl went on to this rifle... a Remington #1 Roller with some newer parts ( I bought it as a 60's - 70's custom 225 Winchester & both my builder buddy & I thought the cartridge too hot for the original #1 action ) so it was rebarreled with an 8mm barrel to get a faster twist rate, & chambered in 32-40... still needs cosmetic finishing in this pic...

Put a scope on it and shoot a Whitetail with it.

I'd respect my wife's feelings and leave the disposition of it up to her.

It looks good, doesn't take up much space, and you don't have to feed it. Keep it as is. There might be a young'un that would appreciate the family heritage.

I would just shoot it as is and maybe chase something on a mountain just to say "I did it".

save it for your kids or give it to other family that would value it more than you seem to.
