I am considering one in 50 Alaskan, but have two rifles in that already. Believe I have a NIB set of 50-90 RCBS dies if you decide to go that route.

Of those two I'd pick .50/90.
A #1 in .500 NE with the standard stock might be noticeably less comfortable to shoot than most other rifles in .500 NE. Might be tolerable if you could boost the weight up to 11 lbs or so.

If you could get those speeds out of the Alaskan I think I could do everything I want with the 50-90. No action strength concerns with the #1.

That 50-90 or 50 Alaskan sounds great...Ouch on the 500 NE...Have you shot or experianced a 500 NE prior ? I have a 50 Alaskan on a 74 Sharps action W/ a #1 heavy bbl 20" it weighs 9.5 pds....It is nice with 435 & 525 up to 1500 fps the 525s at 1750 are bit stout the 435s at 2000 fps are managable...now 700 grns at 1300 plus are another...But nothing like 500 NEs and I have owned 2...my 2 cents worth

500fksjr's question is appropriate. A .500 NE isn't nice unless you have an elephant in your tomato patch. I've shot exactly two rounds through an 11 1/2 pound double rifle in that caliber and it was over my limit. The first shot was not as bad as I expected. Second shot not so bad either. Then I noticed my brain felt like it had been hit by two trucks. Other people's results may vary.

Would a 500 linebaugh suffice? Very pleasant to shoot, but one got the impression that the other end was not so tame....
I was impressed enough that I am having one built!

I'd vote for the 50 Alaskan. I have one built on a model 71 and it's my go to hunting rifle. I had thought about having a #1 built before I built the m71 and still might. I love the cartridge.

Interesting. I am building a 50-110 on a #1 right now with a 30" McGowen bardel. Hope to be shooting it in two weeks.

505 Gibbs & 577 Nitro Express have been limited chamberings - are you looking for something unique?
you could go "bazooka" and do a 577 t-rex.....

Groo here I got an encore barrel from SSK in 50 Alaskan {14in with brake]. I would go with whatever you can get the brass for. The 50A will beat the snot out of other 50's till you get to 50-90 or bigger. The bigger cases can run at lower pressures but with a strong gun the 50A SHOULD KEEP UP. Call SSK and ask them about the conversion. Ps My barrel can chamber a 50A with a 50bmg bullet in it, even from a 14in the max range is over 4000 yds!!! So be careful with heave long boolets......

I was looking to do the same thing and then stumbled across this in 50-90 at the right price. Just received a mold from LBT and Starline had brass. Still need to track down a set of dies and then off to the range..
