A good friend of mine started building custom muzzleloaders a couple of years ago. After a few he started doing period engraving on some of the hardware as well as carving designs in the wood. He then did a bit of scratching on a couple leverguns and some single actions. He told me that he bought a stainless 1911 slide and was going to see what he could do. Well I saw it yesterday and was simply amazed at what he had done. There really isn't anyone in our group that knows much about engraving, for me it looks really awesome, but that's about it. He sent me some pictures and I told him I would post them here, If anyone sees something that doesn't look right or could be improved on,he WANTS to know. So please respond on the thread or PM with any suggestions

Only problem I can see is that it appears he isn't doing this full time and it looks like he should be.

Don't really have the knowledge base to make any real positive or negative comments. Can say that I like it!

Looks pretty awful...... awfully good. I don't know enough about engraving to be a real judge, but I'm liking what I see.

I think your friend has a real future as an engraver!

My only comments would be how much and what's the turn around time. Looks a hell of a lot better than a lot of stuff I see elsewhere! Pics of the work he's done for you would be welcome too Daryll.

I think I would advise him to consider an apprenticeship under a master engraver. I believe he has talant to spare and would benefit greatly under the guidance of someone who could teach him things that he may not yet know.

I do need to back track here a bit. A while back Kevin made friends with a local muzzleloader named Rod Gates. Rod is a very accomplished gunsmith and black powder rifle builder and is also an engraver. Rod's work is incredible. I held a spotless first year, first generation SAA that a big time Colt collector sent him to engrave Rod is the one that helped Kevin get started building custom muzzleloader and started him at engraving. So in a way Kevin is sort of an apprentice. One key that I should point out about this slide and all his other work,Kevin freehanded that design on the slide,no template or tracing. The only reason I wanted to mention this is because, amongst national level muzzleloader shooters especially Friendship In. shooters, my friend Kevin Battson and Rod Gates are both very well known names. Since I don't know who reads or sees this I wanted to make sure I left no room for mistaken animosity to develop between friends over my neglecting to put facts out there.

So I guess the bat motif is his signature, given his name is Battson? I like it!
His engraving looks good to me. I would be happy to have that on my 1911. I'd love to see what he could do on a SAA. If he wants any more picky constructive criticism, it is hard to see the kind of detail in those pics necessary to say much more. What I see, I sure like, though.

The bat signature is great! I didn't even notice it until cmillard mentioned it and I went back and looked at it. That just shows you I can't engrave a bat but I'm sure blind as one!

I did not see the bat myself until mentioned. I will ask him tomorrow if it was intentional. FYI I hesitate to add this since I posted these pictures just for feedback as I said but this slide is for sale. If someone is interested PM me only and I will ask him for price and the maker of the slide.
