I finally did it. Ran into a new production 1895 SBL on the LGS shelf and, despite being a bit leery after hearing all the negative stories, I just couldn't say no. I'd been agonizing for a couple years over whether or not to get one. IDK what all the online fuss was about but mine is perfectly acceptable - good wood to metal fit, great finish with no burrs or rough edges - I still haven't found anything to complain about at this point. Well...the checkering is pretty crude and appears to have been applied with a branding iron...and the box it came in was quite pathetic...but those are very minor issues. Anyway, bottom line is - Remington may have had some well-publicized issues a few years back but, if my recent experience is any indicator, they've really gotten their act together and are nowdays putting out a decent product. I'd gladly buy another - especially if they ever begin making the "1895 Cowboy" again.

I did too,, back in the winter. I bought the 336. Well, it is accurate, and no rough edges. The wood and metal fit is good, but it just does not have that smooth action of old. I've worked on it some with steel wool, and shot a good many rounds thru it and this has helped some, but don't think it will ever be as good as the old marlins. Post some pics of yours. BTW, I shoot cast just fine, even though you can't shoot cast in a micro groove barrel . I shoot 155 grain and very heavy 193 grain all in 30-30 (.308) caliber.

I've heard all about the Micro Groove cast bullet issue. I did some research, and it is my understanding the the Micro Groove barrels were on earlier models...70's and 80' (I think). According to what I have read, none of the recent production Marlins have the MG rifling. I'm pretty sure of this...and I probably wouldn't have purchased one if I though there might be issues with using cast bullets. Me, personally, I'm not at all a fan of jacketed bullets. P.S. They say you can tell which one by counting the grooves in the barrel. If it has 6 it is Ballard...if it has 12 then it's Micro Groove.

Schmidty, You have had me in there for 15 minutes trying to count grooves (in a .30 caliber barrel mind you). I have a pair of 2.0 reading glasses on, a magnifying glass and a mini mag lite. Can't do it. My eyes are bad. Being around welding for 33 years has done it.
From what I googled, only the 30-30 has micro, the rest are ballard. My info may be wrong though. At any rate mine shoots the cast fine. I can tell you I need to put a oily rag down my barrel though, so now I'm off to do that.
Post a pic of your gun, would love to see it.

I think you are right. Internet chatter all says that for current production Marlins, only the .30-30 continues to use Micro.
I'll try an post a pic, but it's really just a plain old ordinary SBL...looks just like any other you'll see.

Okay. I'll try to get a pic of mine on here later. I have added a few things to it. We'll have to revisit this later.

Ya done it, ya me to get my 3-ish yr old 1894 .44 and a flashlight and mag glass too. Pheew ! Six lands/grooves. Have had trouble finding the components I wanted let alone getting to the mods I want to make. Only a sling has been added, and only a 100 or so XTP's for break-in and 2-3 of everything in the basement to test feed and function have been fired thru it.

Good looking rifle tgc. I'll try and get a pic of mine here soon. Been too busy with yard work and vacations - haven't even shot mine yet - but then I've only had it 2 or 3 weeks.

Schmidty,
Click on "REPLY". Click on "ADD ATTACHMENT". Browse your computer for the pic you want to post. Add your pic and it will download it and attach it to your post. Hope this works for you.
BTW, I have a smaller 1.5 x 4.5 x 32 scope coming for my rifle. Should be here today, guess I'll play with it this weekend. I like the scope I have on the rifle now but it is just more than needed for a 200 yard max gun.

Thanks for the instructions TGC...I'll give that a try. Is that a 336W you have there? I just happened to see one at my local Wal-Mart for only $398 !!! Good price for a nice looking gun. BTW I headed off to the cabin last week and fired a string of 6 shots through the new 1895. Fun as heck to shoot, a big BOOM and shove on the shoulder. Not unpleasant at all to fire...but I was surprised the next morning when I pushed on my shoulder....it was a bit sore LoL.

LOL. Sore huh.
Yea, 336W. I shopped around a good bit and of all places wally world had the best price and wood. $389. Pain in the buttocks to buy there but it saved about $50.
You could look pretty hard at that rossi Rio Grande. Same price range, and I operated some pistol caliber Rossi rifles and the action was alot better than my marlin. They have these in Academy Sports usually. AAARRRHHH, I dislike the big box stores though.
