I recently bought a second Lyman 450 off of CastBoolits. The person that I bought it from threw in 5 sticks of Javelina and 1 stick of Saeco Gold lube. Has anyone here used these lubes? They are very soft, smear on my fingers at 70 degrees and since I have a habit of casting several hundred bullets on rainy days and lubing all of them on the next rainy day these lubes don't seem very user friendly to me. Outside of dusting them, are these lubes really worth messing with?

Have heard of both but never used them. I make my own,FWFL Felix lube. Made my first batch about 12-14 years ago and have never looked back. I lube and store bullets in range pick up ammo boxes. The foam or plastic ones depending on what fits the best. Then I can just grab how ever many I want. Also know what I have on hand ready to go. I use a grease pencil on the plastic boxes, just wipe off data when empty. The foam inserts I use a envelope label and just peel it off when empty. Jeff

The softness of the lube probably won't be a problem. I use 50/50 Beeswax/Lithium Grease and it is soft. Probably softer than the lube you got, and I have no problems storing them lubed. You can sit them in the sun on a 100 degree day and the lube will still be in the grooves at the end of the day.

I've used a lot of the Javelina & its a good lube, don't know if they are still in business. Smells good too! Some of the softer lubes work great but hot, humid climates might cause some grief, I'd use it with confidence.

I never met a gooey lube I didn't like be it home-made or commercially manufactured. On the other hand my situation is different from most in that I have a range at my house. As such, when I shoot, I just lube up how ever many I figure I'll shoot then load 'em up. Same thing when I'm loading ammo to keep; lube only what I plan to load. This because the gooey lube is a pain when it comes to bullet storage in that they tend to stick together.

Well I started to lube some and the bottom o-ring was blown. Whom ever thought it would be neat to peen that plug in place should be slapped. I just took it apart and boiled it,replaced the o-ring and started fresh with the Saeco Gold. I lubed a little over 500 45-270 SAA's,used all the Saeco and part of a stick of the Javelina. I appreciated how easy it was to lube with those lubes. And gooey is an understatement. I think I am going to try White Label Lubes softer Carnuba lube when this is gone.

I use both the carnuba red and the BAC, the BAC is quite soft and requires no heat. I only size and lube what I figure on loading at one time. Unless it is rather warm in my shop the red requires heat to flow. Both are great lubes.

Jeff JSH, I've read about the Felix lube on the Cast Boolit site and elsewhere. What do you use to make it and how do you make it?

I prefer a bit harder lube myself. Its just too hot here in S. Tejas for that really soft stuff. Felix Lube is the best I have tried tho.

We used JAVELINA for many years with every satisfaction. For many years it was also the bullet lube by which ALL others were judged.

I realize this it probably going to sound pretty dumb ..BUT... I have another 450 set up with a heater that I run WLL Carnuba Red through. Problem I am having is. 1. I have several guns I shoot the same bullets through except at different hardness. 2. My organizational skills are lacking to say the least, and stuff gets mixed up. I got the second sizer so I could run at least a different color lube through to keep the alloys separated, and since these bullets get used in lower pressure rounds I wanted to try a soft lube that I did not have to heat. I was actually going to powder coat until I ran across the deal on the new sizer.

I would have to dig out my recipe but I use the original Felix. It is fairly easy to make. Bees wax being the toughest or most expensive part to find. I have some homogenized or clean beeswax. It is a fair bit harder than when using unprocessed bees wax. It works and shoots just as well. Some guys add paraffin I don't. It is a petroleum product to my understanding. Under heat and pressure petro turns to tar. So I go the natural stuff. It has worked very well for me in rifles and pistols. If you do by chance make a bad batch, cut it with some beats foot oil and smear it on your leather boots. Jeff
