I have a box of Nosler 240 jhps, and I'm through loading full house 44 mags. Reasons: 1) I've got about 500 already loaded, and 2) the hands are getting stiffer and more painful as the years go by.
So, does anyone have experience with this bullet loaded in the 1000 - 1100 fps range? If it won't expand in that range, I might as well load semi-wadcutters. What dost thou think?

I found the Nosler jhp bullets to be fairly soft if I remember correctly. The 300s mushroomed really easily at velocities not much higher than that. Best way to test it is try the wet phone book or newspaper method I guess

If they are like the Nosler 45 Colt Partition, I would say they will probably expand. The 45 260gr bullets seem to have a soft nose like zeus says. I blew the front end off the 260's running about 1600 fps out of a Trapper.

I don't think they're partitions. I found a sealed box of their bulk (250 bullets) in my stuff as I was finally unpacking the last boxes in my office -- 11 months after moving to the ranch. (Dad's stuff gets last priority.) These would most likely date in the late 90s.

Parson,if it puts a .43 caliber hole in what you're shooting at,does it really need to expand?

Parson,if it puts a .43 caliber hole in what you're shooting at,does it really need to expand? If it doesn't expand, it gains nothing over my swc loads, so why use it at all? They're expensive bullets. No sense in using them if they don't add something to the party. If they don't, I'll swap them to a friend who's still loading real 44 mags.

Well,my miseducated opinion is that it depends on what you shoot. The hollow point cavity is opened via the the resistance of whatever it plows into. Short answer if that velocity permits thorough penetration in a large animal with your swc loads, then it will allow the hollow points to expand.

You may also want to drop Nosler a line and see what their design parameters for that bullet are. I spoke to Swift a few weeks back about their 45's and was told that they are designed to "initiate" expansion at 850fps. If they would or not is a different story, they are tough. Nosler should be able to give you the same information. I would guess that if they say they will start to expand at 800fps (just a number I'm picking out of the air) then you should be good as long as your target is not to for out.
