What is a good hand load that would replicate what the first single action shooters had available in the 1800's? I have a few powders I can use-Unique, Bullseye, Red, Blue and Green Dot, Titegroup, SuperTarget, some other pistol and pistol/shotgun powders. Were most bullets 250 grainers? I have a new 4 5/8" Ruger New Vaquero in stainless to work with. Also what bullet could I pour for an old time loading? Any info is appreciated.

LYMAN AND RCBS BOTH HAVE 250 GRAIN .45 COLT FLAT-NOSED (CONICAL) BUILLETS THAT PRETTY MUCH DUPLICATE THE ORGINAL. 8.0 GRS OF UNIQUE IS PRETTY CLOSE TO 35-40 GRAINS OF BLACK POWDER VELOCITY.

I don't see where you mention caliber, but John is right if you mean .45 Colt. Winchester and Remington both still load a similar lead bullet I believe in their loads. One of my favorite loads of this type is 7.6grs of Win 231. If you want to buy your bullets, let me suggest Desperado Bullets in Dayton WA. I use their bullets a lot, they shoot good and are reasonably priced.

45 Colt. I will try some unique. I might find another mold and try that. I like 231, but can't find any around here anymore, hence all the other powders mentioned. Thanks for the suggestions. JT

Maybe try 35-40grs of FFFG. It's exactly like 35-40grs of black powder. A thought. Yeah, I know it's messy. Some say smelly, I say it smells like history !
