I heard about this a while back, but I recently heard it brought up again. Ammo mfgs. (I guess thats who wants it) want to make primers that only have a shelf life of 6 months. I this a serious threat to us shooters and reloaders or is it just rumor?

I haven't heard this rumor, but let's say for arguments sake it's true and in effect. If I KNEW primers had only a six month shelf life, I wouldn't buy any, in any form - loaded or otherwise. I suspect most other shooters would do likewise. Ammo/primer manufacturers would be hurting VERY quickly.

What would be the point? How would anyone benefit?

I hope it ain't true, if it is I've got a few thousand that are nothing but scrap! But I loaded some of them a couple of months back and they worked fine. Ronnie

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen for the primer manufacture...picture this, a man is eaten by bear when 4 month old ammo fails to fire, or cop is killed,or home owner is beaten to death. As others said "Baloney, HOGWASH" Than again might be good for NY and California

This lie was invented in a gun store to sell components. Its a few years old, but I guess for all I know could be 30 years old!

BULLROAR. Exactly how would a chemist, alchemist, or politician implement degradation at manufacture, to reach, simultaneously, full morbidity at 30-below zero and 100-degrees, in six months, irrespective of delays in entering distribution, sales, use?
That won't stop the Little People, who mind everyone's business but their own, from trying. David Bradshaw

This is a rumor that started back in the clinton era. Some of you guys may remember when primers flat out disappeared back then that this was one of the rumors.

FWIW: I have some Japanese-made Herter's primers from the early '70s. They work just fine in 7.65mm Argentine. Also a few Alcan pistol primers from the same time period. No problems with them either. Keep 'em cool and dry and they last a long time.
