I've pretty much filled available space I have for rifles, with one exception... I could still use a bolt action .308... I'm really not the type to like the big magazine bolt rifles, but for some reason in the .308, I've been looking at them ( I'd actually like the "option" of the big mag, but would likely keep a 5 rounder in the rifle most all the time )... I'm pretty much put off by all the taki kool add ons, but I'm liking the Ruger Gun Site scout, as I could take off a lot of the "stuff"... then I saw one of the stainless / walnut guns ( I think Cabela's exclusives ) & I think that cinched the deal... just need to save up the money... anyone seen one of these??? thoughts??? any negatives on the rifle as far as function & accuracy??? ( wish it took mil surp magazines rather than Ruger proprietary ones ), but... another I'm looking at, is a Mossberg MVP Varmint, with the bench rest laminate stock... the Mossy is quite a bit cheaper, & uses Milsurp mags, but is likely much less rifle... I've not handled a laminate gun, but didn't like the feel of their plastic stocked rifles...

I have the stainless/laminated version of the Ruger scout rifle and really like it. I set mine up with a Burris 2 3/4X scout scope which is taking a little getting used to but so far so good. With that setup I get 1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I use Alpha Industries mags which have the same capacity but are shorter than the factory Ruger's. www.alphaindmfg.com/about.html Decent accuracy, handles extremely well and 10 rounds available.. I'm very pleased. I would note the stainless version has a barrel 1.5" longer than the blued version. I just saw a walnut stocked version on Gunbroker for a very reasonable price. www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=416450918

this Mossy is a new rifle this year, but this is exactly what I was thinking in a new .308 bolt rifle...

In a word the new Mossys seem to be Savages. Either they cloned every Savage milestone development or they are rebranded Savages . I'm not clever enough to tell but the similarities are remarkable. The barrel headspaces with a lock ring. Bolt design is the same with the removable bolt head. Accu-trigger looks the same. Me thinks if you like the way a savage shoots you will like the Mossberg ,, and save a bunch of money. Or save a bunch more and grab an Ishy .308.

Your heading refers to a "carbine", but I would characterize some of the examples cited as "rifles". I once had a Remington Mdl. 7 .308 with an 18 1/2" barrel. When the original fiberglass stock cracked, Remington replaced it with Kevlar. I later gave the rifle to my oldest daughter about 20 years ago after she took about 6 head of game with it. It is a really lightweight, accurate carbine.

Point well taken KEN... I guess I thought I'd have to "settle" for a carbine to get the "option" of regular detachable mags... though I'll likely keep a 5 rounder in it most of the time, I thought the rifle would be more versatile if it could hold more... I was looking at MVP Patrols, & Ruger Gun Site carbines in the past... the MVP Varmint, is an interesting option, as you noticed, its a "rifle" I don't like the feel of Mossbergs composite stocks, & in general prefer wood... I was really liking the Ruger Stainless / walnut gun Site rifle that I think is a Cabelas exclusive, at least until I saw the MVP Varmint... was in Cabelas yesterday, & handled a 223 MVP Varmint, & it seems like the ticket... the .308 is new enough, that they can't just order on in, would have to be a special order yet...
SEAN... don't ever feel bad about posting links to gun porn... BTW... I'm a pretty big CZ rifle fan ( FIL had a collection that we inherited, & continued to build on, so those rifles are in a different "group" ) I don't happen to have a .308 in the CZ, but I'm about out of space there as well... unless I move one of my 8 mm's over to the milsurp collection ( which has an M1-A in .308 ) so I do have at least one .308 already...

I missed that you were looking for a large capacity option, just focused on "carbine". I looked long and hard at the CZ's in 223 with iron sights, but my heart was set on a Ruger, so I settled for a .223 Hawkeye African. I Love it. But I'm not much of a rifleman. Come to think of it, that's the only gun I've ever ordered!

I love my CZ in 223... & my Hornet is more accurate than my Ruger was

I went with a 788 Remington...old school. They used to be cheap. :-)

Take a look at the Howa Ranch rifle. It is scalloped at the receiver to reduce weight and features a shorter light weight barrel as well. You can get a new trigger guard kit that accepts a detachable 5 or 10 round magazine and further drops off a bit of weigh at least when the magazine is empty. Mine is quite accurate as well.

Ruger's Ultra light 77 ...Perosnlly, I think hi cap in a bolt gun is over rated. I had a Gunsite Scout, enjoyed it but not the AI mags. If you really want or need hi cap mags get a AR 10 that accepts FN metrics or get a FN FAL. my personal favorite .308 Carbine in an old tang safety 77 international. Light and handy it sports a new Leupold 30mmm 2x7...

Remington 600/660 is also an option.
Personally I'd just go for a CZ550 FS or a Sako Bavarian Carbine or instead of a .308 the Enfield Jungle Carbine (mostly because it's bloody ripping and all that < that would be 1920's English English which I learned from my Australian father in law, American translation is something closer to "neato but not sure what I'd do with it").

People did give good suggestions here but I say grab whichever one feels right when you throw it up to your shoulder.
