Hey.. new on this Board with limited experience reloading. Have a good size box of lubed .41 Rem Mag LSWC bullets from an unknown source. Lead hardness aprox. 13.5 BHS. Have Winchester Super Field (WSF) Powder. Don't know for sure how fast that 13.5 BHS bullet can be driven w/o barrel leading. Figure maybe 800-900fps?.. 1000fps? Can't find any load recipes using WSF in .41 Rem. Mag w/230gr bullet at any speed. Any suggestions for a safe starting load? BTW-have access to a chronograph..

WSF is listed by Winchester as primarily a 20 gauge shotgun powder, but also useful in 38 Super, 40 S&W and 9mm. For a 200 gr. bullet in the 40 S&W they show from 4.4 to 4.8 grs. Obviously the 41 mag case is bigger, but would think that 5 grs or so might be a starter. Check to see where WSF shows up on a relative burn rate chart compared to other powders and that would also give you some guidance.

ALWAYS CONSIDER THIS : iF---IF !!--- you cannot find loading data for a certain propellent in a certain caliber or with certain projectile weights, there is an excellent chance it is because it does not fit in that application at anyway no how. There is ALWAYS the chance it MIGHT be downright dangerous in THAT application. This is best NOT found out the hard way !!! And lastly, by your own admittance you are a beginner and a beginner should NEVER be playing around in fields not already well trod by the projectile/propellent manufacturing companies. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED, I AM DEAD SERIOUS HERE !! AND so it goes...

+1. Buy a pound of new powder. Plenty of good, established SAFE loads are available from the manufacturers.
Fingers and eyes don't grow back.

Get some Unique. We shot 6grs the other day with a 210 JHP and standing offhand my boy put 6 in an inch at 15 yds. 10 grs did about the same but obviously was a much peppier load. Would also work well with lead slugs. Gun is an original S&W model 58.
