Local shooting buddy dropped by the shop yesterday. Talking about the 480 Super Redhawks sitting in the display case. Discussed the 480 and 475L cartridges and the slight differences in the two. Talked about the old and new front sights on the SRH. Talked about the physical size differences in the SRH and a custom 475/480 Blackhawk. Concluded with a plan help him make an educated decision. We will gather up a 480 SRH, a custom 475 Blackhawk, 480 and 475 brass, 475/480 dies, and some 475 bullets and send him home to play.

We've all traded for stuff, hauled it home, and then realized that it was nothing we needed. I know that most of the customs and bigger than 45 stuff I have owned through the years I had never seen or held in real life before I bought one and hauled it home. We are doing our part here to improve the process!

I agree completely. I bought the first 480 the LGS had,in fact I ordered it. If I had shot a 475 and actually seen the real difference between it and the 480 I would not have bought my BFR. And for the record YES..Our dear AXE is definitely an enabler of the highest and most respectable order....shooting 2 Buckeyes and a Max thanks to him.

Let's not be pointing fingers here... I'll offer up the opinion that this is a forum of Enablers...

Sixshot's is the one that pushed me over the edge. His 480 is a perfect hunting tool. I almost went down the custom road but settled on a FA 83 in 475.
Of course "Settling" on a FA is never a bad thing.

Friday morning I watched a forum buddy pull out of the parking lot with a 480 SRH, a 475L Reeder Ultimate Bisley, 25 pieces of 480 brass, 25 pieces of 475L brass, 50 400 grain bullets, and a 475/480 die set... Somebody is having some fun somewhere!

i preferred to remain anonymous, but Stan graciously lent me his 480 super redhawk and 475L Reeder Bisley for comparison. I might take a flogging for this, but couldn't see enough gains over my 45s to give into the siren call of that 480 srh at the pusher's. i am going to take what i would have spent on a 480 srh and apply it toward having John Gallagher build me an octagon .500 linebaugh.will be making the trip to Jasper shortly.

My exact findings...I am down to 1 45 LC an up to 5 500L of different configurations Might add that having the help of members like AXE will save you a lot of $$$ in the discovery process...

Now was a productive exercise or what? I told flexjr he could always backtrack to a 475 later if he decided that he needed one. John does make a nice octagon 500L too... One of our forum buddies had a Gallagher 475 that inspired me to have my 500 made. His 475 was easily the twin of mine.

How did you come to this conclusion if I may ask? Did you shoot any game? Everyone "needs" a .480/.475, to complement all of the other calibers we "need." LOL!

The other thing to consider is do we go .510 or maybe... Those off the shelf .500 bullets sure can simplify life some days. ...AND breached the subject of a 500 Max with flexjr while we were talking the other day. I think one day here in the near future I'll let him take one of my 500 Maximums home for a little exercise.. Could even let him chose.. Reeder? Huntington? Both?
