I just picked up this 625 3" 45 acp. I hate the Pachmyer grips on it and need some recommendations. I have decent size hands but never have been able to shoot an N frame comfortably DA. I've tried with my 27's and .44 N frames but it has never been that big of a deal since they are hunting guns. Just don't have the right grips on them. So I'm looking for a set of new grips for this gun. Looking at Ahrends retro's or maybe boot style. Maybe a set of factory S&W combat grips? anyone have a set they want to sell? Thanks.

Factory combats definitly!!!! These are the later style (about 1990) combats that are thinner, and have a flatter contour.

Check with Zeus, he has a 3" model 24 round butt that has both the factory combats and a set of Keith Brown combats. He may want to sell the factory set.

I do not like finger grooves so pulled my factory grips and went with Ahrend's Retro Bananas and am more than pleased.

You know your only going to get about thirty suggestions here..... Craig Spegel's for me. You didn't state why you don't like those grips. Is it the ugly rubber? The shape? Why?

They don't fit my hands very good. Plus I hate rubber grips. I'm leaning towards Ahrends. I know everyone is different and will get a bunch of different answers just wanted to see what options are out there or If anyone had a set of wood grips to part with.

I prefer the service style and a T-grip on mine. Here's my hybrid 1917/25, .45acp/.45 Colt with a pair of Melvin Tyler's Tru Ivory and T-grips.

I will take BLUE MAGNUM stocks in the Skeeter Skelton design on ANY J, K, L, and N frame S&W and go about my business perfectly satisfied.

Groo here Do pacs not fit? I can't use any Smith style grip as the hump on the left top hits my thumb bone and ALL my Smith's have pacs. I might try a set of customs some day but hold out little hope.

I would love a set of Blue Magnum grips especially for one of my mountain guns but a little out of my price range right now. Probably going to get a set of Ahrends or factory grips for this gun.

Craig Spegel's grip as shown in squawberryman's reply are excellent.
I greatly dislike the Hogue, Pachmayr or S&W finger groove grips. They hold the centerline of the bore high above the centerline of the forearm. This increases the torque/flip in recoil, against the wrist/forearm. For a field packing N-frame I install the Pachmayr Compact grip as shown here. The Pachmayr Compact (Graf's carries them for the N-frame) allows the hand to choke-up higher on the grip frame, which lowers the centerline of the bore from 3/8" to 1/2" lower, creating less torque during recoil, on the wrist/forearm - more of an in-line recoil back into the forearm. I greatly appreciate fine wood grips, but have to admit the Pachmayr Compact rubber makes for a durable field packing grip... One nice thing about 'Free Advice' is that it's free...!
Note: before I get besieged with comments about the recoil with .44 Mangleum loads in this, it's used as a lightweight field .44 Special, k'...

You mean something like these? I like them a lot and the maker is a good friend, makes owning them all the better...

Finger grooves never seem to fit where my fingers want to be...
I love the shape of the Pachmayer Compact grip, but the covered backstrap then makes my stubby trigger finger too short for proper hold on the trigger.
The open back Ahrends or Spiegels are my pick.
