If it i a large frame 45 colt,(pretty sure it is) than 13gr (975fps FA97)-14gr (1063fps FA97) is ok loaded at the deeper seated canulure. From Brian Pearce, handloader magazine. Your FPS will be a little lower because of gun and you will probably seat in other canulure.

How hard do you want to run that bullet? 10gr of HS6 is pretty mild...

I had found a picture by Mr. Taffin of a nice target group that had written on it... 45colt 300gr.LBT 10gr.HS-6... but it didn't say if it was a max/start load...right now all I have is 300gr.XTP bullets, local shops are out of all powders and bullets,i do have some Hs-6 powder and Unique stashed back. My old Hornady Data Manual doesn't show either powder listed for a 300gr.XTP . Thanks guys for all the help!

I would guess 10gr would get you somewhere in the 700fps range. A bit meak I would think for that bullet, try www.hodgdon.com and go to their reloading data center, they have a lot of standard and Ruger only loads and list HS6 for most of them. Or used to as I recall, I know they changed it some and it doesn't offer as many choices now as it used to...

bbhunter, John Linebaugh, in his treatise on THE .45 COLT - DISSOLVING THE MYTH, DISCOVERING THE LEGEND, lists a HS-6 load for a 310 cast and states that the data can be used with the 300gr Hornady XTP (but the velocity will be slower). He gives a starting load of 12.5grs and a maximum load of 13.5.

As long as your shooting targets I think any of your shooting will be fine. The questions would only arise if you are hunting.
