So earlier this week I had an opportunity to get something I've wanted for quite a while (and difficult to come by around these parts)... and with my birthday coming up on the weekend, I decided to "go for it".
My local dealer has known for a while that I've been looking around for a SAA in the "reasonable" (at least as far as SAA's go) price range in shootable condition. Didn't care about caliber, barrel length , finish, generation or numbers matching. In a perfect world it would be a 1st gen 4 3/4" in 45 Colt, but I'd be open to just about anything. So a couple of weeks ago he mentions he might have one I'd be interested in.
Let's just say this one has some "character". I instantly fell in love with it. It letters as a 4 3/4" 45 Colt shipped to Krakauer, Zork & Moye Company, El Passo TX
The grip frame/backstrap is clearly from an earlier gun. The maching 4 digit serial number on the gripframe and backstrap suggest to me that these may have come off a Navy cartridge conversion (Richards-Mason)?
Someone long ago scribed their name into the grips with some other info that appears to be a town and province/state in Mexico and a date of 1890.
Mechanically it's pretty crisp and tight, with a decent enough bore. Some rust specs, but very strong rifling. Ran a few lightly loaded Trail Boss loads through it, and it grouped well and centered. She's sprung pretty stiff, but I've heard that's not uncommon.
While not a real collector piece, it fits the bill nicely for what I was looking for, and within my budget. There are other ponies here to keep it company
I ALSO received from my parents Max's book on Ruger Revolvers!!! What a nice book! ... and was thrilled to see my Single Six pictured in it as well. !!
Anyway... it was a pretty happy birthday for me all around!!
