I've always found that a Marlin will outshoot a Winchester. I'd stick with the peep sight since mounting a scope on one is almost a sin.

Maybe I should have made myself more clear, I meant if I was shooting it! I took a few deer with a model 94 & quite a few with a 336 Marlin, always liked the Marlin best. But again, as far as groups go I'd like to see some 100 yd. groups with the lever guns felllas, I'll stick with the 5" groups unless someone proves me wrong. Now you can't shoot 10 5 shot groups & pick out the best one & call it a 3" gun.

I would probably agree with somewhere around 4" with factory loads. I think the reloader could tighten 'em up some.

I've been following this a bit. I own a few Marlins. I own one in 44 mag, and I've owned a few in 30-30. I think both are excellent within the limitations of their ammo & shooters ability. But I was remembering the Ruger ads a bit differently about the 44 Carbine. So, I dug out my book of ads. In Jan & Feb of 1962, the ad shows Bill Ruger with a warthog & the 44 Carbine. But the controversial ad with the gorilla was published June of 1963. The hunter was Frank Delano. He was using the 44 Carbine as well. I have heard that Bill took a lot of flack for that ad.

My junior year of high school I was working part time in a gas station, this was back in the day when you went outside & pumped the gas, washed all the windows & checked the oil. One day a couple of fancy city slickers pulled in & gave this country kid a real lesson! They told me they had been to Vegas & were busted, needed gas money to make it home. They opened up the trunk & it was full of fancy wrist watches...at least they looked fancy to me. I told them I didn't have any money for a watch so they ask me if I had any guns. I said I didn't but my older brother had a nice Marlin 336 in 30/30 & I was positive he would love to have a new watch so...... I ran a block home, got his Marlin & dashed back to the station & made the deal, I thought I had really put it over on those city slickers. Abut 5 minutes after they left my mom showed up & wanted to know why I had took Bob's gun, I showed her the shiny new watch & she grabbed it out of my hands so hard I almost fell down. She ask me which way they went & took off after them. She found them in a bar in the next little town & when she walked up to them with that wrist watch I heard later you could have heard a pin drop. My mom was a tough customer & she knew a crook when she saw one, she slammed the watch down & they went outside & retreived my brothers 30'30 & when I got home from work she gave me the business (belt) that ended my gun trading for a long time, at least trading some one else's guns!

Now THAT'S a story ! Did Bob find out ? 'Nother whopping ? LOL. But back to thread here. When you go from say a M-29 or a SBH to a Ruger carbine or a M1894, you gain 175-200 fps with same bullets and good powder choices. steve

Dick, I LOVE that story! I have always enjoyed your stories, but the ones with your mom are the best!

Dick, If your Mom had ridden her horse in the bar after them, they probably would have given her the rifle back, PLUS ALL the watches!

Ken, when my mom rode that horse into the bar every cowboy in Cariobou County bought drinks for my mom & dad, don't think she was able to ride the horse out after the party!
