Don't pass up a 444 if you run across one.

I never took a 44 Carbine to Africa just a Super Blackhawk, Dragoon style and an original Flatop. Talked with Bill Sr. about his experiences with the Carbine. Said in the photo with the Upland Gorilla, he never took so much heat in the press about how terrible it was killing that Gorilla. Said he would never pose with another game animal. For a couple years I took a 12"x12" 1/4" cold roll steel plate. Shot it at 100 yds with 3 of the 240 gr. Factory loads of the day and then one with the Super Vel 180 gr. JSP bullet. The plate was painted white. The 3 240 grainers varied from a lead smear no dent to a deep dimple with the Norma 240 gr. Tri-Clad. The 180 grainer looked like a drill press hole no dimple just straight thru like a drill bit. Nils Kvale, then Pres. of Norma tried to get the NRA make me take the display down saying it was a fake. That I had drilled the hole. The NRA never asked me any questions. That is what 2000 fps will do. Would group 11/2" at 100 yds all day long with a 4x scope. Would also go full length in a 300 lb. Hog. I'll take the Ruger Carbine to a 30-30 any day. Have probably owned a dozen Mod 94 Winchester 30-30's and 32 Specials. FWIW dept.

Lee J.... heard way back from someone about your marksmanship with your Super Vel .44 180 JHP and it penetration on big game. Handled that round somewhere but didn't fire it. Would certainly appreciate hearing your dope on development of that bullet and round.
And whether it was rough on a Model 29. David Bradshaw

David, in short I had S & W rebuild about 4 or 5 Mod 29's, never charged me. But quite honestly after about 18-2000 rds they would rattle like a castanet. Small price to pay for the performance. We made three bullets, all 180 gr. JHP and JSP lead and 3% antimony core, .035" jacket wall thickness for AO use. Then a JSP .045" jacket wall thickness. The jackets on the 3% core were gilding metal 95/5 On the thick jackets they were 85/15 Mil-spec type gilding metal We advertised the latter for max penetration. Had a customer return 1 of the thick jacket bullets and asked why it didn't expand, lead nose just smeared. Said the other five bullets made complete penetration, this was on a Polar Bear at about 45 yds. The bullet he returned he said was under the hide on the off side. The Bear died before guide had to shoot. His info.
Back in those days the SAAMI spec on 44 Mag was 40K not to exceed 44K, ours ran about 36-38K CUP. Never blew a gun that I ever heard, but continuous use, would make one rattle. That was before the IHMSA days. FWIW dept.

P>S> to above. The thick jacket bullet used a 5% antimony core.

Thanks again for all of the good feedback and pics. More are welcome. I have owned and killed a few deer with a marlin 30-30 in the past. I have no experience with the .44 mag lever though or any .44 mag rifle.
Y'all are right I'm sure that a .44 mag will come along for me to buy. I bought a marlin 336 new today, $389. I won't be out much money on it.
I don't have a problem with owning both, BUT I WILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO THE WIFE AGAIN. Nah, she gives me a pretty long chain.
BTW, I think the saying goes "everyone should own a 30-06". Now, I have some good 200 grain jac, soft points in that caliber I'm sure will murder a hog, shot through a browning auto rifle.

The 30-06 is the old standby, but the 300m Win Mag does it all better, paticularily with heavier bullets. FWIW

Yea, I saw Pigman's dad kill three with one shot from a .300 magnum, on their TV show. Pretty much all in their tracks, might have run a couple of yards. Amazing. To keep with the thread, ya know you can a .300 mag in a BLR.

Depends on what you want. Both will kill.
I would disagree with a .30-30 only holding 5" @100.

Hey now, I have a 94 and it shoots great! It's no bench gun, but 3"@100 with a peep sight is no challenge. If I worked with it more and mounted a scope....
Minute of bacon on legs for sure.
