What is you guys, that have owned a few different levers, favorite barrel length on a lever action and why? 16, 18, 20, 24. I don't know if caliber affects the answers, but I was thinking about pistol calibers.

Any of the lengths you mention will work just fine for pistol calibers.
Want "handy/quick" - 16"
Want a nice long sight plane - 24"
I have several from 16-24" and find each shoot better than I can.

16 and 18 work great for pistol calibers. With pistol caliber ballistics, its usually a 100 yard gun, and its short, quick and handy. 20 and 24 inch barrels are better for rifle calibers to stretch you out to 200 yards. You'll get even better performance with the plastic spitzer tips on the Hornady Leverrevolution rounds. But 30-30 never made much sense to me in a trapper length. And pistol calibers don't get any ballistic benefit from a longer barrel. The only short barreled, rifle caliber in a lever that makes sense to me is a Marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70. And that's because its a big game, handy, brush gun.

I like 20's. Balances and points well for my needs.

I like the compact handiness of a 16" length, even with a .30-30. I sold such a Winchester about a year ago, since I pretty much never use rifles any more.
