The 69 looks interesting. Will make a nice gun for the field with .44 specials. Might be the first lock gun I get.

I'm sure Smith did their homework. But the 44 Mag makes you wonder, how different are they to the 5 shot L frame 44 specials that we are not supposed to hotrod?
Still a cool gun, I'd buy one.

The 69 is interesting, but I'd sure be more interested if it came with a 3" barrel.

Oh my, since I saw that L frame 44 mag I've been telling my self I don't need one. I have a 696 and a 396 already but it's not working. It would be a good addition to the five shot 44 set.

MIM parts and locks. No thank you.

That 5-shot L-frame would have been sweet with a light, Mountain Gun, contour barrel. Still pretty cool as it is.
The 629 is a shame, however. Revolver-makers ought not to succumb to the "rail-estate" mentality of the AR-15 world, wherein every firearm is seen as a cheese pizza waiting for its toppings.

Agreed, but if we have to put up with that to get the occasional gem (5 shot 44 mag L frame), maybe I'll give S&W a pass.

MIM parts and locks. No thank you. And two piece barrels. I hope they have the bugs worked out of that. The 460 XVR is the most interesting to me, I hope the follow up with a 500 version.

The weight on that 69 is not all that much less than a 6 shot 629 mountain gun. I would have thought it would be lower.

I would have thought it would be lower. would bet the 5shot cylinder weighs almost as much as the larger 6shot Nframe cylinder and coupled with the full heavy profile barrel makes for the close proximity in weight. would be a sweet piece with a mountain contour tube though

I have a 696 (35 oz w/3” bbl) 396 (18 oz w/3+” bbl). Brian Pearce did an article on the .44 special and grouped loads and guns into 3 categories (15K psi, 22K psi and 25K psi --17.0gr A2400 w/250gr in 25K psi cat). BP included the 396 and 696 with guns capable of handling 25Kpsi – in fact he stated S&W had tested these guns at pressures well beyond 25K psi. A number of people point to the thin barrel shank as the weak link in the L Frame .44 specials. I don't know if this is problem or not, but I know of a 396 shooter that shot of bunch of the 17.0/2400/250 in his with out any probs (I know statistically irrelevant) just sayin.
Just took some measurements of my 696 -- Cylinder length on the 696 is 1.630” (loaded cartridge could be a bit longer as cyl is not recessed for case rims). There is a gap of .10” from the end of cyl to the front of frame window. The picture of the 69 in the link provided above appears to show a little longer cylinder which would allow the frame to support the barrel shank a bit more.
My 4” 629 Mtn Gun is 39.0 oz. and 696 with the same grips weights 35.9 oz.
The L frame fits my hand a little better than the N frame. I really like the 4” barrel of the 69 and I load a lot more mid range .44 mags than .44 spcls. If I can find one, I will be trying it out soon.
FWIW,
Paul
