Found this 'un at the last gunshow, weekend before last. Too bad no one had a headspace gauge or any '06 ball... but both will be discovered in time. Its a gin-u-wine replica, but I wanted a shooter anyhow.

Congrats, Sir.
Friend had what I take to be such a rifle-GI parts on a post war aftermarket receiver? That what yours is?
His was, for some reason, quite a nice cast bullet shooter.
For some reason, the Mauser heritage of the design is more visible than usual in your top photo. Not sure if its that front band, or just what it is.

Yep, parts gun assembled on a new made receiver. Apparently the guns were first marketed by Golden State Arms, but had some issues with the european receivers being out of spec: Nat'l Ord took them over with US made receivers and finished the run. I read that HP White tested the Nat'l Ord guns and said they were sound. Current mock ups are available now, parts guns built on new receivers. I'm happy with it. I have always viewed the 03, and the 03A3 in particular as being the best bolt gun fielded. SMLE runs a close second, to my way of thinking. I imagine this 'un will have some lead slugs in the diet as well.

Years ago when I was young rich and good looking , ;D I orderd one though the CMP ( hope thats right ) Then you could recieve guns by mail order, and through the U.S. postal . No paper . When I got it, it was still greased up pretty much. Not quite as bad as the ones I had to clean in the military . Bad enough. Totally new. No rebuild , brand new.Cost $ 9.00 for the rifle and shipping was $10.00 . Wonderful gun . The only round I was able to reload , 30.06 . The rifle did a lot better than me. I'd load one round at a time during week nights, and shoot them all on Sunday . I worked 6 days a week and 12 -15 hours each. Had a new baby, and a pretty wife . But life was much easier back then . Wish I had never let that rifle get away. but it was better when the wife got away! ;D ........................................Mutt

My father had a mail order 03 in the late 60s: it was a great shooter until a friend "helped" him kitchen table customize it. Never was the same after that. He let it go shortly thereafter, and has mourned it ever since... I might share with him, if this ones a shooter, and if he doesn't let any "pals" "fix" it.

mutt that WAS the DCM if I remember rightly. I still wish I'd a had a few bucks as a kid. 20mm Lahti with chest ,and two chest of ammo mail order....I got me an 03A3 a few years back for $350 near new and a new Govt. replacement "C" stock that the owner had put on, for his bolt gun matches. It was bedded and shoots well even now. (2gruve Rem. 9-43) Come to think of it my daughter was about 2 yrs then and is 26 now..... How time flies by.... Hoss I'd put a sling on it and get a fist full of stripper clips and keep your right thumb down when you shoot it. I'd never thought I could get my thumb half way up my nose, wish I'd cut my nails closer too....

1917 is a real good bolt gun if you can find a Rem. or a Win. accurate and strong too.

I agree that the O3's and O3A3's are something special, but the me, the Enfield pattern 17 is a much better rifle. You know what they say about opinions. Bill

Sure, the 1917 Enfield is a fine battle rifle... FER A SKIRT WEARIN FRENCHMAN! (Wuz that what you were lookin for?) I like the 17, and the #4 MkI, II, III... (or is it #1 MkIV? I always screw that up!) The Krag is an awesome boltgun as well. Heck, I like 'em all! But next I want a Garand... or a dragunov... Or maybe a pony.

My only point was that the P17 was a stronger action with what I think are superior sights to the O3 OR O3A3. Granted, the garand has it all over the bunch of them, but that's not apples to apples is it. As for the SHIRT WEARIN FRENCHMAN, We'll leave him the sho-sho. They deserved that gun. Bill

I had a french MAS 36 for a time, and it wasn't really a bad design. Ungainly, yes... but it did have a handy bayonet/marshmallow toaster. I believe the stock on mine was bedded with used wine corks...
