How many of you have experience with the .480 Puma rifles? I've heard some speak of headspace issues. Is this common or random quality control issues?

Boge Quinn, of gunblast fame, has one. Or did.

I would be curious to see how they hold up in .454 Casull. Seems like a lot pressure for these guns.

raven5: Can't answer the "reported" head space problem, but here's a review by Jeff Quinn gunblast.com/Puma480.htmnolongcolt: Here's some info on the Rossi 92 .454 C gunblast.com/Paco_Legacy_454.htmI have a M92 in .454, but haven't shot it any where near enough to address longevity issues. Can't imagine any reason for shooting a large number of top end loads. It is a handy, accurate and powerful little carbine. . . . FWIW, Paul

Thanks Paul for the link. After reading that I think I'm glad mine is a .44-40! Even 20 grs of 2400 is wimpy compared to the loads Paco was shooting. These guns are stronger than I would have thought.

I've got a .480 Ruger Puma '92 on the way. Sunday is my birthday and I hope #2 son shows up with it. Have some 425 grain lead loaded and ready to try out. Tim

I have had two of these at one time and have shot many hundreds of rounds through it. I can tell you the best overall round I have run through mine has been the 355 grain WFN at 1400 FPS. Great accuracy and it is very effective on critters up to and including a Elk. I have grown fond of the rifle and enjoy shooting it now to disrupt the gods of the leverguns purists I have a Scout Scope Mount on mine and run a small red dot sight on mine. This combination makes for a quick handling , accurate powerful little rifle.

Went out this afternoon and shot a few rounds through the .480 Puma. Overcast, poor light, snow on the ground and kinda cold for us transplanted South Texas boys but the gun performed flawlessly. The furthest away I could get from the target without moving it to a different range was around 90 yds. No problem for an aging, semi-blind guy to hit it everytime with iron sights. Fun to shoot too! The heavy coat might be helpful with the recoil but it didn't seem too bad. So far, I like everything except the wood. I'd like to swap the wood out for some Treebone lumber, but he specifically warns against the Rossi copies not fitting his Winchester fitted wood. Guess I'll have to give him a call and find out what options I have for upgrading. I am a sucker for nice wood.

Snyd,
The 425's did just fine using Hornady brass. No difficulties encountered. Bullet was Cast Performance LFNGC. COL is around 1.605" plus or minus - didn't trim the new brass so there is a bit of variation in length.

I know my 454 is sensitive to OAL with a wfn in 454 brass. No prob with 45 Colt brass though.

We have some experience with a Puma 480. Out of the box, the headspace was .028 over maximum. Shot it at a hundred yards, accuracy with the issue sights was pretty good. Rechecked headspace, added another .013. THe 454's seem to have similar issues, from the folks I've spoken with. Too bad an American manufacturer wont make one.....................
