got a buddy that just bought one of these take down Ruger 10-22's... the rear sight is pretty crabby, he'd like to put a scope on the gun, & would prefer to put a barrel mounted long eye relief scope on the gun, since anything better than mediocre accuracy is unlikely with a receiver mounted scope on a take down rifle...
I haven't been able to find anything specifically made for the Ruger yet... wondering if there is anything out there either with the proper contour, that we could drill & tap the barrel for, or that uses the rear sight dove tail

magnumwheelman.... Always suspicious of takedown arrangement when rear sight or scope isn't barrel mounted. John Browning great takedown semi-auto .22 carbine, circa 1900, great for stowing in a bag or canoe, is subject to this maddening trait. Especially some of them, which have been beat around for generations. Browning designed guns which withstand the ravages of time which nevertheless are not horse and moron proof.Installing an extended----cantilever----mount defeats the compact takedown feature. maybe I didn't explain myself well... we are not looking to install a sight on the receiver, we are trying to put one on the barrel, & trying to avoid using the drilled & tapped receiver... this is something I learned long ago via the Contenders... I've heard from some of the Ruger "take down" owners, that I'm worrying too much, & just mount the scope on the receiver, but some of these are the taki-kool guys with scopes mounted on their plastic stocks with "picitini" rails molded into them, & claiming great accuracy

BTW... I e-mailed Ruger yesterday, asking if they offered a base for the barrel of their take down rifle, or knew of an aftermarket base... they replied 1st thing this morning ( very good reply time ) but unfortunately don't currently offer one, or know of any aftermarket manufacturer that does...

Brownells has aluminum stock for Weaver-compatible rings. The base stock I have used must be contoured to the barrel and drilled/counterbored, and the crossbolt slots must be cut. I epoxy the base to the barrel with bedding compound and barely snug the screws. I do not tighten the screws until the epoxy is cure. Treat screw holes in barrel and screws with mold release.
Brownells base stock come long and high enough that you should be able to cantilever, if you want. David Bradshaw

BRADSHAW... the reverse cantilever is a good idea... could still use a regular rifle scope... the only issue I see with that, is that the "special" bag the 2 part rifle comes in, has a big enough pocket to hold a scoped barrel, but if the scope were to cover the receiver, it would be too long for the bag... coincidentally that is just the route I went, ordering a 12" piece of bulk base & will have my other buddy contour it to the barrel... may use the dovetail, & only need to drill & tap one hole

I assume your buddy has already shot the gun and is satisfied it is accurate enough for all the extra effort? 10/22s can be fickle.

sorry, we are both really busy guys ( he's my local welding / fabricator guy, & farm harvest season he almost has a line at the door for emergency repairs ) where we were at with it last, was my old receiver mount, & a cheap 3-9X I had in my gun show sell box... I had used up my last 3/8" tip off rings, & the local discount store had some cheap see through rings... the 3-9X scope didn't have enough adjustment to get to point of aim with the high rings & receiver mount... the only other extra scope I have right now, is a 4X LER scope, that won't work with the receiver mount... I think he's going to run up to Cabella's when he has time, & pick up another scope, & maybe some lower rings... I also picked up a chunk of aluminum Weaver base, that I could have my retired tool & die buddy contour to the barrel & drill & tap it... although the owner of the rifle had it over to Tool & Die guys house, & they were talking about maybe making a barrel band with a base mount screw on top, & using a dovetail nut for the rear screw hole, & not needing to drill & tap... either way, I think we're going to experiment with the receiver mount, & dis assembling the rifle several times & see if / how much movement the POI has, before making a barrel mounted base
