I'm getting a hundred dollar gift card to Amazon and I'm curious as to what sort of gun related books y'all consider necessary reading.
I already have Max's book and really enjoy it. Another one i enjoy is Water's Pet Loads collection. I think i need something on dangerous game guns and double rifles, with lots of pictures! Also want any book that will improve my shooting and reloading skills.
Thanks for any ideas!

You might try to find a copy of Boddingtons African Hunter II. Big book, lots of info on guns and countries to hunt. AH I by Jay Mellon is the quintessential safari book but is dated now and all the pics are black and white. Both will set you back a few bucks but are well worth it.

I thoroughly love John Taffin's books on revolvers. I have read each several times and continue to learn and glean each time I read them.

"The Custom Revolver" by Hamilton Bowen is a must-read as far as I'm concerned. All of John Taffin's books should also be in your collection. I have a new book on Ruger revolvers that is being released in December.

Although not about dangerous game rifles "The Rifle in America" and "The Complete Guide to Handloading" by Phil Sharpe are both great reads packed with information.

Max, looking forward to your new book! However, the only copy of Bowen's book available is listed at $2877, and while I'm sure it's very good, I don't need it quite that bad!
Sharpe's books look good and I've heard good things about him. I'll keep an eye on those.
I'd like to get several books for my $100, instead of getting one expensive book.

Don't forget Hamilton's book is available as an e-book. I haven't tried that since I have the real thing but it is only about $10. Tim

I also recommend Bowen's E-book for cheap. He has a pretty entertaining style of writing, even if some of it is pretty technical.
A writer that I love about hunting Africa is Peter Hathaway Capstick. He makes you feel like you're there with him, and he gives a real thrill by describing all the ways you can "get the chop" in Africa. He goes through the gear, including double rifles, cartridges, etc. "Death in the Long Grass" is great, as is "Death in the Dark Continent," "Maneaters" is great, and the book that describes what you should expect and details about gear, etc., is in "Safari: The Last Adventure."
I highly recommend these, you can't put 'em down, and you'll be telling the kids and buddies the stories within.

If you only want to invest in one, buy "Death in the Long Grass." Capstick should be required reading for anyone that has ever imagined themselves behind a double rifle wit sweat in their eyes and their heart in their throat. A lot of history, detail, and not necessarily hunting related knowledge in his writing. You'll be back for more.....

That's a tough one and honestly some of these will burn that $100 per book easily...I'd say at the least I'd have... FIRST AND FOREMOST!! ELMER KEITH "SIXGUNS"John Taffin- All of them ("Book of the 44" is my favorite) Hamilton Bowen - The Custom Revolver (at least get the Kindle version for $10) Skeeter Skelton - "Good Friends, Good Guns, Good Whiskey: Selected Works of Skeeter Skelton" and "Hoglegs Hipshots and Jalapenos" Max Prasac - Big Bore Handguns and his yet to be released Gun Digest Book of Ruger Revolvers Al Goerg - Pioneering Handgun Hunting (rare, but an absolute must read from the Father of modern Handgun hunting)

COR, great post and thank you! I was wondering if i should get "Sixguns" or "Hell I was there", but I think I'll do Sixguns. I was also wondering which of Taffin's books to start with, so i'll give that one a look. I'll probably get one of his.
I'd also been thinking about Death in the Long Grass for a while, so i'll probably add it to the list. I think i can get Sixguns, Death, and a Taffin book all for under $100, probably also pre-order Prasac's new one.
I just made a shopping cart containing the following books:
1. Death in the Long Grass, Capstick 2. Custom Rifles: Mastery of Wood and Metal, Turpin (any better books for looking at beautiful guns, tips on building and using such things?) 3. Sixguns 1961 Edition, Keith 4. Dangerous Game Rifles, Wieland
Unfortunately, the gift card isn't here yet so I'll have to wait to place my order, but i think it's going to look a lot like the list above.
