Mom is out of town on business so Gabriel and I have the run of the house for the week. We'll probably try and clean everything back up on Thursday We decided that today was going to be a Gabriel Elijah and Dad day so I called the office and told them I'd be out and then we started out the morning checking on some pork butts that we are smoking today that we had seasoned in the fridge. Afterwards, we headed out for breakfast at the Kolache Factory and then to the Deanna Rose Farmstead here in Overland Park. This started as a 15 acre or so park in the 70s that has grown and now appears to be covering a little more acreage and has over 200 animals for the kids to see and learn about including an eagle (fractured wing and would never be able to be released to the wild again) on loan from the US gov., goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, buffalo, cows, geese, rabbits, etc. Neat place and free to the public as its owned by the City. They gladly accept donations so I always leave them a 10 or 20 in the jar and countless quarters in the feed machines Was renamed in 1985 to Deanna Rose in honor of the first Overland Park police office killed in the line of duty. Its a neat place if you are ever in the area and have young kids. They have period barns from the frontier days, schoolhouses, tractors and farm implements all over. The garden is manned by a whole slew of master gardeners to help teach people on plants, etc. I need to go there for a while Anyway, just thought I'd share a few pictures of a great day away from the office. I need these every now and then just like the rest of you Gabriel found a lady selling M&Ms about the time we were leaving so he was thrilled and we headed home for lunch and start the smoker. I'll take them off late tonight after he is finally in bed for the night. Sorry, no sixguns involved but this was more fun today anyway Breakfast Farm pics.... Informing the duck that he missed the food that he threw Then the culmination of the day will be when these are finally off the smoker ;D I have started using the small Bradley smoker here in KS as its much easier to fool with rather than having to fight the wood and fire all day. Just don't find the time to do that anymore. This thing is perfect for that, auto feeds the wood for you and is much better at keeping the temperature steady. Gotta love that and the taste is phenomenal!

Great looking boy, Glenn. Sometimes a slow day is the absolute best.

Sounds like a good day to me, they do something like that at the state fair in OH, they'll even let the kids try to milk a cow if they want, but you gotta get there early or late for that

Yeah, he had a great time. As far as a slow relaxing day, Ron, this boy ain't ever very slow. He's keeping me young, that's for sure I don't know that we missed a single square inch of that place while we were there this morning. I can't wait for the shooting trips in the future, they will be a hoot I'm sure. I'll just keep gathering supplies for him until then Thanks guys...GS Bisleyfan, give me a call sometime and let me know how the 41 deal worked out for you and what you decided to do in the end. Take care and I'll talk with you later. GS

I forget you have a kid that age ... you should whine more Mine is tickled to death as long as he gets to drive the heavy equipment. That doesn't make for the straightest row plowed, but what the heck.

That doesn't make for the straightest row plowed, but what the heck. Mark, You know they always told me that the Lord wouldn't throw anything at you that you couldn't handle. He must have known that I'm a little helpless somedays cause Gabriel really is a good kid. He has his moments just like every other 2 1/2 year old every now and then and gets a little whiny when I have a differing opinion, but overall, he is a pure joy. The heavy equipment thing, I understand completely. Steering is pretty much back and forth.....really fast! He's heck on a lawn mower, I don't let them engage the blades whens he's riding but he doesn't know the difference When he is a little older, I'll take him to some of our work sites and let him ride on the really big equipment. I think he will have a blast on the blades and dozers Every 5 year old should get to run a D6 or D9 at least once. Should make for a fun future day at work with Dad I guess. I wish I still was around the farm life more as he is getting older. You learn a lot that you don't realize until later working around the house. Tough to get that experience in the "land of concrete" that most are growing up in these days

Well, we know for sure that Glenn wasn't packin' iron, because he didn't whack that goat! Glenn, that is time well spent. Bravo, my friend, bravo! Too many people around. It did strike me as sort of ironic as I took that picture that my son loves to pet goats and I shoot "pet" goats sometimes. Oh well, he doesn't know that yet Update: Well its midnight and the food is finally done. 14 hours and it looks good, now to tear it all apart for sandwich fixin's......Lunch will be awesome tomorrow!

Yep, sent the pictures to the wife yesterday where she could see he had fun and she immediately asked where I found that shirt....evidently, its sort of short for him in her opinion. After looking at the pictures, I guess she is right but I still said "It looks fine to me" I just told her she shouldn't have hung it dead center of the closet and I wouldn't have grabbed it Oh well, now that shirt is destined for the storage bags with the others and I've posted pictures of my son that will embarrass him forever due to a too small shirt Of course, the boy has more clothes than Macy's on any given day and I dress him in clothes that don't fit. Poor kid, has to grow up with a "special" father I guess my only defense is we're lucky that I at least didn't confuse pajamas for regular clothes, that could have been terrible for him
