Congratulations on the score. It is nice to see you moving up. As much information as you have shared, I believe there should be several of us learning about this discipline. I certainly don't see any others that produced their own action, stock and bullets. I am looking forward to seeing the 30 Stingray in action.

Have you decided on what round to build one of these brutes around? 6 PPC. And maybe a second barrel in .22 PPC. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Lee, will shilen rebore the burned out 6mm barrels to .30? Shilen doesn't re-bore. Nor do any of the other top barrel makers. Even if they did, the cost wouldn't save you much over a new blank. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Lee, is it possible to buy 6mm bullets with you? No, I don't sell bullets. I looked into it and found I'd need a Class 6 FFL. And to get one of those, you need a business license. Arlington Virginia, where I reside, won't issue them for residential. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Really, i thought krieger did at one time. Oh well, this will be a sweet rifle I can't ever remember them re-boring. Maybe they did way back when, but not now. They're focused on new barrel blanks. Effective 9/1/17, they've even suspended full barrel chambering and fitting. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Last night I chambered a Lederer 13.5 twist barrel in 6 PPC. My second Shilen was fading and I have a match on 10/7 in Mechanicsville, VA. I was going to break it in Saturday. But this afternoon Whidden emailed saying my .30 Stingray die shipped. Talk about timing. I'll shelve the 6 for now and start on the .30. I don't have bullet dies yet from Ulrich. And custom swaged are a 4 -5 month wait. That leaves 115 Bergers, which can't be found anywhere. Until I'm making my own, I'll use 125 gr Speer TNTs. I've been told they fly pretty good in the .30 BR. We'll see. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

.30 Stingray Sizing Die _____________________________________ Here's the .30 Stingray sizing die by Whidden Gunworks. Notice how I removed the de-capping pin and expander. I pin punch primers so carbon and anvil bits don't dirty my press. On the right is the bump gauge. The die sizes 0.0007" at 0.200" and 0.001" at the shoulder junction. That's exactly how I asked Whidden to cut the dimensions. I set the die to push the shoulder back 0.001". I'll begin with 0.002" neck tension from a 0.327" bushing. In time, I'll try 326 & 328 to see if it wants more or less pull. Bushings - the top row is for my 6 PPC. The bottom row is for the .30 Stingray (titanium nitride coated) I'll dial it in Saturday using 0.3 gr increments over a 2.0 gr span. Each will get 4 seating depths: jam+5, jam, jam-5, and jam-10. If I find a node or two, I'll push the bullet back even farther to see if it tightens. But from what I'm told, 30 BRs like the lands. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

But of course I am not shooting Benchrest. I am shooting them in a 308. I got my answer on the bullet dies before I ask that question. I was thinking that you had ordered a couple of more presses a few months back. I was wondering how you were set up for all this.
I noticed the change-up with Kreiger, when last week I was looking for a new barrel blank for a 45,, made me wonder if they are just snowed under or if custom work does not justify the headache and trouble. I look forward to reading about this one up and running.

You're correct Charles. I have .30-caliber carbide dies on order with George Ulrich (7 ogive). Hopefully they'll arrive by year-end. He's also sending more presses. I don't want to swap out my 6's. As for the Krieger, I'm not stuck on one barrel maker. Shilens have shot well for us since the 1980's. But I was eager to try cut and Bruno had a 1:17 HV on the shelf. I'm also sitting on some Lederer blanks. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

.30 Stingray Tuning ______________________________ In limited testing, the gun likes 32.0 grains of LT-30. Seating depth is ‘at jam’. Below are two 3-shot groups from Saturday with that combination. For reference, the inner circle is 0.500”. Measured edge-to-edge and subtracting 0.308” puts both in the low 2’s. It’s a decent start for day 1; especially with 15 – 20 mph wind and off-the-shelf Speer bullets. My wildcat finally sees competition this weekend in Richmond. Fire-formed .30 Stingrays. The bullet is a 125 gr Speer TNT. I’ve also started using a Lab Radar. If you recall, I never tune over a chronograph. The only thing I care about is the paper. ES and SD are secondary until I land nodes. But the Lab Radar helps by showing velocity shifts as conditions change. Meaning I’ll leverage it to stay on nodes (as opposed to finding them). Illustrated – say I’m shooting my Stingray in tune at 2,980 fps. Temperature is mild and humidity is low. Then humidity spikes as the day progresses (ex, a rain front). In theory, velocity should increase. Perhaps 3,020 fps under the same charge and seating depth. The gun will probably jump tune. To trim velocity, I’ll go down a half-number on my Culver. 0.3 grs of LT-30 usually equates to 30 – 50 fps. Lab Radar shows the impact real time and performs analytics on the string. The unit’s chip also stores the data, which can be downloaded to Excel. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"
