Is the hard chrome more durable than stainless. From what I understand, it is.

cddogfan 1.... hard chrome plate is not not durable than stainless. Hard chrome is harder. It is thin compared to standard chrome plating. Hard chrome is popular on firearms for its molecular thinness, which doesn't affect dimensions the way nickel and chrome do. You can wear through hard chrome, which is not a question with carbon or stainless steel. Hard chrome provides excellent weather protection and wear resistance between parts. The wear resistance is not an issue with serious firearms grade stainless steel. Colt had M16 chambers and/or bores hard chromed across the street from Sturm. Ruger on Lacey Place in Southport, Connecticut. Bill Ruger, Jr., used the same facility to hard chrome the barrel face and forcing cone on an SRM prototype .357 Maximum. I immediately abraded the hard chrome on firing Remington experimental ammunition. When I say "immediate," tiny dots of flecked chrome appeared on the corner of barrel face and cone is the first six shots.
Mikhail Kalashnikov chrome lined the bores of his AK 47, against corrosive primed ammunition and to preserve reliability in the field, fully aware the rifle would be issued to masses of illiterate soldiers. Beretta and other makers have for years chrome lined shotgun barrels against fouling and wear. Some of these platings may be thicker than hard chrome. Which leads me to suspect the term "hard chrome" is more about application process than mineral content, as chrome is by nature hard. David Bradshaw
