So many times, we see the finished product and we don't have the proper respect for the amount of work that went into a piece. That's why I'm posting a few pics of the roughest handgun I have ever owned. I'm sending it to Alan Harton for an expert evaluation on Custom/Shooter/Scrap potential. I have $110 in this .357 frame. The Max cylinder came out of my $480 Ruger Maximum that's being converted right now. The SBH grip frame came off a SBH that wears an alloy XRN3-RED now. Sorry about the photo quality, but luckily I do work at a company where it was ok to take pics of a gun at my desk.

Remembering mama's rule to keep my mouth shut if I don't have something good to say... ;D Sight pin hole looks plently low enough for a flattop! How does the diameter of the max fit into the OM cylinder frame? One might question the use of an oversize cylinder for something like a 44 Special but the mid size frame custom 44 special that I just traded for has a 6 shot oversize cylinder in it... For the mid size CF is the use of a max cylinder a waste? Prehaps a much more common standard NM cylinder would work as well...

Axe....this is a NM 357. If it were mine, I'd either do a tight chamber 45 Colt or the 1.40" 41 you guys thought-up. Even if 414 brass gets tough to find, you can still shoot 41 Mag. Keep us posted. Looks like a neat project. -Lee www.singleactions.com

NM? Yeow! Color my face red! Guess it just looked so rough that I didn't look at it hard... Something about being afraid it would burn the retinas of my eyes....

I assumed it was an OM too until I looked at the right side of the frame and saw two holes. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Yep, this is the donor for the .41 mag (maybe 1.4" .41) This frame + pieces from the parts bucket is capable of becoming a working piece. Just got off the phone with AH. Apparently, he has worked on worse. Quote is in the works, but it looks like a go. This will be my 5th gun sitting in AH's shop, and I haven't seen a finished one yet. Probably build it as a long cylinder .41 mag, then evaluate maximum OAL possible & bullet availability before we open the chamber forward. Axehandle, what bullet NTC lengths did you look at for your 1.4" .41? Beartooth is selling a 300 gn SSK .41 with a .500 NTC. That's more than I shoot in my .44 mag (I shoot a Hunter's Supply 300 that actually weighs in at 289) Mount baldy has a 275 grain .41 Keith that I was told has a .475 NTC. ( Haven't seen one, just called them) Lots of 265-280's out there with a .450 NTC.

When I talked it with John he recommended stopping at 270 grains... John said that 41mags had a history of not shooting well with heavier bullets. Reading of some of JT's stuff later I saw a reiteration that same limitation. JT was writing about making a recommendation to FA when they made their first 41 mag. I understand that FA listened to his recommedation and built a 41 Mag that shoots heavy 41 bullets well. Somethng to keep in mind if you plan to use a factory Ruger 41 barrel.

Here's my 1.40" 401 Bobcat with a 265 grain cast bullet. It has a narrow meplat and still fits the standard frame (using a long cylinder with minimal barrel to frame protrusion): -Lee www.singleactions.com

Lee, considering that the 414 cases from Starline will dry up one day, isn't the parent case for your 401 Bobcat the 220 Swift? Are the 1.4 inch 41 guys going to be able to make cases from the Swift too?

It's all in the twist rate. I used factory 1:20" barrrel on my first 5-shot 41 conversion. It shot decent with 335 grain cast bullets but accuracy was better when I topped out at 260 (295 grain SSKs still cut 2.5" off the bench at 25 yards though which is pretty good). Later I re-barreled the gun with some 1:16" Pac Nor. The bigger bullets shot a little better, but accuracy still was best in the 230 - 260 grain range. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Axe....yes, my 401 Bobcat is based off of Swift. I almost used 414 when I designed it, but always worried about availability. Unfortunately, 220 Swift won't work in a long 41 chamber. The Swift has a base diameter of 0.445" whereas the 414's is 0.434". You may be able to swag them down, but it'll be tough. 220's have a pretty thick web. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Here's a picture of one of my 401 Bobcats for reference. As you can see, I'm using nearly all of the frame window: -Lee www.singleactions.com
