Panic time... down to my last 100 large pistol primers. I've used Winchester primers marked for standard and magnum for the last 25 years.
This afternoon I stopped at the big gunshop up the road. They had a lot of space on their primer shelves but still had a lot in stock of about everything. 1, 000/day limit at competitive prices. What luck! Luck was right. Everything but "standard" large pistol. They had magnum in CCI but the sailslady assured me they wouldn't work for 45 Colt. They also had Federal Match but she was sure they wouldn't work.
Any reason why CCI magnum primers wouldn't work for light loads of Unique in 45 Colt?
Any reason why the Federal Match wouldn't work?

they can and will "WORK" just not exactly what you really need in the old Colt unless your shooting HEAVY Ruger Only and /or 5shot levels. use the good old W-W for Standard or Magnum LP primer for all my LP cap brass. others work but i am very hung up on what works for me.

Looking at the CCI website, they say the magnum primers are to be used with heavy charges of ball powder. They don't say they would cause problems with light loads of flake powder.
The Federal web site has match primers in both standard and magnum. Since I don't remember seeing magnum on the box they were probability the standard model. Equipped with the product numbers, I can go back an informed shopper.
The shelf where the Winchester standard and magnum primers would have been was empty. Who knows, tomorrow they may be in stock and the CCI and Federal sold out. It's just crazy out there!

yup, its crazy. would avoid magnum caps with 2400, but most other slow powders will like them

I just picked up my ipad and had a message from Midway that CCI 300 primers were in stock. I remembered I'd just got a note from them about a promotion code to get $10 off. Went and got code. Came back to place order and they primers were out of stock already.
I bet the guys at MidwayUSA get a kick out of how fast stuff sales out.

bibbyman.... use what you got to get what you want. Few months ago I had to load a pile of .45 ACP. My dwindling supply of standard primers dedicated elsewhere, the .45 ACP brass took on mag primers, 231 powder, and lead bullets. Backed off charge one or two tenths grain; shoots fine. As for suspected incompatibility of 2400 and mag primers, remember the international championship was won with that combination.

In today's world you just can't go buy what you want. Some things you are lucky to find a substitute. I see there are some new to me brand names out there. TulAmmo is one and Wolf is another. TulAmmo is apparently Russian. I don't know about Wolf but at quoted prices, I suspect it's foreign also.
Any advice on primers from these third alternative brands?

There is no reason magnum primers won't work with Unique in the 45 Colt.
I'd be willing to bet that you could load some with standard and some with magnum primers and couldn't tell a difference on target. I have used standard and magnum primers in the 45 Colt and can't tell a difference.
As far as Wolf and TulAmmo primers, they are both Russian. I "feel" that they aren't as good as Winchester, CCI, or Federal. But, that is just a feeling and I'd bet that if you shot 5000 rounds loaded with them, there wouldn't be a single primer failure.
