Has anyone done a wildcat on the 450 marlin? I know the 45/70 has be catted to death but never seen one on the 450. I was wondering If it could be blown out to 475 like the 45/70. Or would the belt be a problem? Also necked down to say .358 or .375. Been looking at mine and wondering. Would love a .475 marlin.

Sounds like a good project. I really like the 470 and 475 Turnbull. My gunsmith works at Turnbull's and everytime I go to his shop I look over his 475. That is built on an 1886 but I would like to have a marlin done in .470.

What does Turnbull base his cartridges on? I may just end up picking up a cheap 45/70 and send it to Reeder for a .475 GNR. I want to make a wildcat based on the .450.

Turnbull's is on the 348 case. I think it is pretty close dimentionly to a 45-70 except the 348 is longer. The .470 is shorter than the .475 so it will work in a Marlin.

Isn't the .450 just a shorter .458 Winny? If so, there are plenty of cartridges based on that - some short ones like the 6.5 Rem mag.
I don't think the .450 case will eat a .475 projectile without neck reaming.
A while back I cut off a .300win and tried to seat a .475 boolit in it. The brass is too thick....

Technically it is based of the .458 but the belt is different than basic magnum belts. But in theory you should be able to do anything to it you can a .458. Not sure if it will blow out to .475. 45/70 would be easier but hasn't been done in a .450 so sounds like a good reason to try.

There is a poster on the leverguns website that has a 375 wildcat based on the 450 Marlin.

Reeder does some 41, 44, 45, and 475 bore stuff on the 348 and Alaskan case. I think he does single shots in Rugers and Encores and Marlin lever guns too. His 457 and 475 GNRs are based on the 45-70 case. I'd look hard at his stuff before I took on a belt. www.reedercustomguns.com/information/GNR_cartridges.htm

If I were going to wildcat a cartridge, I probably wouldn't use the 450 case, but would look at more commonly available cases like the Winchester belted magnums, .458, etc. This would ensure cases availability in the future. Just a suggestion...
