I know. It's probably an old topic. But when I ordered my 500, I bought a bag of Winchester brass - just so I'd have it on hand when the new toy arrives. I never gave any thought at the time to the controversy over large pistol vs. rifle primers. I was under the impression that the problem had been resolved 10 years ago and that all 500 brass had been standardized to use large rifle. My Winchester brass is NOT marked "R", nor does it say anywhere on the bag - or Winchesters website - which primer is appropriate. Are they really making two different kinds of brass. IDK what to do. Anyone know what the deal is here? Thanks.

Thanks shorty. One problem is that, if one does internet research, most all the discussions and articles date back 8-10 years...followed by silence...nothing recent. It's kinda scary for newbies to reloading the .500. I guess it's a liability thing for Starline...they're forever doomed to mark new production cases with an "R".

they maybe. last i knew hornady still marks thiers. in '03 when gun was announced at shot show i ordered gun, brass, rcbs steel sizer die set( was no carbide yet) and 3 molds. had all but the gun by june and it came in august about same time the primer pocket change took place. i still have my 1st one thousand count of starline brass made for pistol primers. still use them but omly with LP primers and loads running under 40Kpsi.
