for parts 70's - 80's BDL originally in 22-250 with a shot out chamber throat... I'm thinking 6.8 SPC will be fine, for the distances I shoot, &, as I have a Contender barrel in the caliber, I already have plenty of brass, bullets, & dies... will have to get a new bolt with the correct bolt face ( PTG ) any others sources that would be reasonable? I already have a 6.8 Mag box coming, hoping to use or modify the 22-250 follower, & perhaps the spring... pick up a barrel, & reamer, & my retired buddy can go to work... right now, a Shilen stainless contour #5 is what I'm thinking of for a barrel ( from Brownells ) reamer will likely be a PTG... anyone have any suggestions for other parts options, or advice building a 6.8 SPC ( the Shilen barrel is 1 in 10 twist, I think normal SPC barrels are 1 in 11... but I'm thinking 130 grain bullets, or perhaps even 150's thoughts or suggestions ?

Watch gunbroker. Rem 700 6.8SPC bolt guns can be had for less than what the work you are thinking about will cost.
I saw a NEW 700P (police) 6.8 on there the other day for under $700. They did not make many of those.

The factory 6.8 Remingtons I saw were 26 inch heavy barrel rifles. They sat on the shelf a long time. Knew of a guy who bought one to take out west varmint shooting. He traded it off quickly when he returned. I'd think that, while a man might spend considerably more, he could end up with a much more practical rifle for that cartridge. Me? I ended up with a 15 inch 6.8 just to get the deal on the Encore frame. Bought dies, brass, and a selection of 270 bullets too. Haven't proceded beyond that point. The 6.8 sits on the shelf with the 15 inch 22-250 barrel that came in the same deal. Maybe I'll shoot them both this fall. Did find the ammo for the 22-250 a couple of months ago...

If I was toting a 26" barreled rifle, I think I'd suck up the extra few ounces a long action would add & get a .270. IIRC, 6.8 was developed for max oomph out of a 11.5" - 14.5" tube. I know you can get extra velocity out of a 18" or 20" barrel, but no idea at what length velocity peaks.

I'm thinking a 22" #5 contour barrel... something a bit handier that that 26" but still more rigid than a sporter weight barrel... plus I already have the Remy 700 that is currently chambered in 22-250 with a shot out barrel, & another custom 22-250 sitting on the rack... & I'm not a huge 22-250 fan... so I'd have to do something with my action anyway... & my retired buddy can always use the extra cash...

How about Reboring the barrel to 270/250 Savage or rebarrel it to that. Ackley built and rebored rifles to that caliber

SHERIFF's... sounds spendy converting the rifle, & buying custom dies, etc... I already have all the stuff for the 6.8 SPC, since I have a Contender barrel in that caliber
