Hi everyone. I'm running low on Unique, and it's not the easiest to locate right now, so I need input on which other multi-use powders are available.
I wouldn't mind a ball shaped powder, as the big flakes from Unique sometimes throw off the grain count.
Can anyone recommend other powders that can be used to reload both pistol and rifle? I don't really have many magnums, but if I were to load 357 or 44, would there be a pistol/rifle powder to cover them, as well as 223, 308, and a few other common calibers...?
I got started with Unique when I bought the press off my buddy, and I'm all about being able to use an item to cover multiple functions, so I'd like to stick with a similar type so I don't have to have many different powders just to load each caliber. I'm not super big into dialing in each caliber right now, I'm wanting utility.
Please give me your opinions on what you've found out there. Thanks. -K

Compare Universal Clays to Unique. It's virtually interchangeable in many (perhaps not all) recipes. Burns a little cleaner too.

maybe not what you're looking for, but Trailboss can be safely loaded in most revolver & rifle cartridges... I've never played with it, with an autoloader, but it's fast enough, that it may work in some cartridges

Alliant Promo. Almost the same burn rate as Red Dot, so I use Red Dot loading data. $90 for 8 pounds. I use it in 30-30, 30-40, & 38-55 light lead loads, as well as most all pistol/revolver calibers (except heavy magnums).

Alliant 2400 would work well in the 357 and 44 as well as covering cast bullet loads in your rifles.

As Paden mentioned....Universal is a decent replacement for Unique. Also HS5 (if you can find any) can be used with the same measurement as Unique.

I find that I am using a lot of W-231 in several calibers from 32 WCF all the way to 45 Colt. Very clean burning and accurate enough.

I've considered, but not yet tried, Power-Pistol for this role. Yes ? stevemb

Don't overlook Bullseye either, it can be pretty snappy in the top end loads but it's really pretty versatile, especially if maximum velocity isn't the goal. Red Dot/Promo has the same benefits, and are often overlooked on the shelves.

powerpistol is a good substitute, as well as longshot.
