Groo here Still looking for stuff for the 41 mag project. Is there any difference in starting with a fixed or adj sight frame? This will be on a smaller frame[3 screw etc.] And what loads will it take?[Factory, heavy bullets, lite loads?] This is to be a No#5 type. Thanks

The mid frame rugers can handle SAAMI 41 mag loads in the six shot configuration. Your limiting reagent is cylinder length. Do a custom oversize five shot cylinder, and I bet you can run em hotter than you want to hang onto an XR3. The only mid size fixed sight gun is the New Vaquero, and there is no realized "strength difference" between it and a NM .357 anny or three screw .357. The cylinder is the weakest link in a Ruger revolver. IIRC, when I was measuring for my mid frame .41 (.357 anniversary base gun) the 250 grain CPB bullet just fits. Most 265 and up won't. OM .357's have a just a touch longer cylinders than the NM anniversaries. You can get most everything under 250 gn into a mid frame with stock cylinder length. If you want to run long (NTC of about .450) heavy (265+) bullets at 1K fps, consider the .41 special.
My goal with my .41 mid frame will be a 250 gn cast bullet at 1300 fps. Or the Hornady 210 XTP at 1500 fps. Both of those are well within reach for this conversion. (using H110/W296) completely within reason.
