I always use a tool bit, I grind. Fine if you have a lathe.

P.S. to above. The 11 degree crown is based on BR guns, I really fail to see ANY advantage on a sixgun.

PPS to above, to test how true the crown is, take a Q-Tip and rake if from inside the bbl to end, if it leaves a piece of cotton, re-cut. That is the BR standards of BR gunsmiths.

Been thinking about re-crowning a muzzle loader I put together from a dixie gun works kit back in the eighties. It groups left even though I have the rear sight almost all the way to the right. It does "group" so perhaps a re crown isn't the answer. I have been told that something in need of a re crowning would not group..shoot an erratic pattern. Just searching around I found this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xpzv1Spsnk

Dave M. tools are top drawer, very innovative. He has made many reamers for me both custom and standard. Dave makes it possible for the non lathe owner to build a complete rife as well as blue printing an action. Not cheap, but quality hardly ever is.
Dave was top reamer grinder for Clymer for about 20 years, when they sold, he decided to go into business for himself as: Manson Reamers and Tooling. FWIW dept

I'm sure Dave would make ANY angle cut you prefer, call him.

I have never used the PTG tool, but do you think chatter would be more of an issue with it than with the other tool that has more cutting flues?

well, I recut my crown last night. gave a very nice, even cut. took it out this morning and it still shot 2-2.5 inch groups at 25 yards. I guess I should look into getting a new barrel and maybe checking cylinder alignment.
