While my FA97 41 mag has always been very accurate, it looked like the barrel had never been crowned. I decided to send it to this ohio gunsmith I had used before and that JT spoke good of. I told him I just wanted the barrel recrowned. In about a month I sent him a letter asking him if he had got my gun. In a few days I got a note back from him say he had, and that he had recrowned it, opened the forcing cone, and removed the lead from inside the barrel. He said the cost would be $140. First off, all I wanted done was the barrel recrowned. I DID NOT want the forcing open up and I can sure as hell get the lead out of the barrel my self. This kinda rub me the wrong way. The gun still seems to shoot good but I did not think it would cost $140 and I sure did not want the other things done to the gun. What do you all think? I doubt if he will get anymore work from me.

I guess I look at it differently. I am asking a professional to do some work on my gun and he finds other items that need addressed then I am glad he went ahead and did the work. That is why when I send a gun to get worked on or customized I tell the gunsmith what I want done and then I give them the freedom to see if there is any other things they think need done while they have it there. Granted, I do ask them to let me know what they find and what they suggest doing but if Andy found a forcing cone that needed addressed and if I sent him a gun with leading in the barrel then I would be happy to pay him the $140 and get these things taken care of while the gun was there. It may be that the forcing cone had some bearing on the leading, who knows. Just my opinion but I figure my customers do not tell me how to service their on-site system so why would I not trust the judgment of a recommended gunsmith professional when he thinks there are things to be addressed? Especially if it was on a high dollar gun like a Freedom Arms.

While I agree with your summation a phone call is quick and cheap............ its easy spending other folks money.

He is hard to get on the phone. The gun did not lead very much. They was very little in the barrel. I did not think the lead would effect crowning the barrel. After 40 years of fooling with handguns, I don't know much, but I can shoot the lead out if need be. As good as the gun shot I sure did not want the forcing messed with. Guess it was my fault for sending it to him. He did put a nice crown on it.

I'd talk to him. You got a deal at 140 IMHO anyway...one thing that confuses me is if it shot accurately why mess with it? You could have also had FA do it, most likely for free if it was really that bad. Shoot it and see...sometimes these things are just a result of bad communication or miscommunication. I'd sure go to him before speculating any further...but that's just me.

He would of taken the barrel off to recrown it. He then probably noticed something in the forcing cone and recut it while he was at it. Removing the lead was probably part of cleaning up the barrel after those 2 maching operations.

I guess I should have not posted this. I did not think it cost that much to get a gun crown. As good as the gun shot, I did not know about messing with forcing cone. Kinda wondered if it would shoot as good. Maybe he thought I should have sent it FA. Going through this dam divorce kinda makes a man edgy I guess.

There is nothing wrong with your original post Razor. You just got several different guys perspectives on the situation, some similar to yours, some slightly different. I'd call Andy and just ask for an explanation from him. He as always been great to work with from my experience.
