Living here in Waseca County, it is sort of mandatory that you own something from Herter's, even if it is only an old worn out catalog. It turns out that I have a .401 PowerMag. I am more than a little curious how many board members have one of the relics of Waseca's past, or maybe you have more than one. Chime in and let's see if we can get an idea of how many are here and who has cornered the market on George Leonard Herter's entry into the world of big bore single actions. Feel free to post photos of guns, barrel markings, etc.

I own four and just bought a fifth. On the first three I paid $240 or less. They used to be a bargain but prices have crept up in recent years. Here are photos of a few of mine: The second one gets shot reguarily using re-formed 41 Magnum brass. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Howdy Neighbor... I live in Freeborn County...I regularly part with a couple Herters items at the Wells Gun Show, where I usually have a couple tables... traded the only Herters Gun I had this spring ( a manlicher stocked 270, with a Herters scope ) I don't however have a Herters handgun, though I now have several 10 mm Magnums ( nearly identical ballisticly ) an Automag 4, a custom Contender barrel, & a custom S&W 610... powermag dudes... carry on...

401 powermag Now that looks like the reincarnation of a Herter's Catalog ad from the '60's.

If you've never handled one don't let the looks or $49 MSRP fool you. Powermags (and their cousin, the Hawes Chief Marshall) were very high quality SAs. In fact, cylinder fit and overall timing were among best of that era. Mine are extremely accurate across a wide range of bullets (cast & jacketed, 170 to 265 gr). The plastic grips are the only fault I can find with them. Cracking around the ferrules and Herters inserts are common to these guns. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

My .357 Magnum is as accurate as any centerfire handgun that I have ever shot and the .401 isn't far behind. As for the $49.00 MSRP, that was only on the .401, the .357 & .44 were more expensive. Like George Eastman knew in the camera world, the real profits are from the recurring sales. Film cartridges or bullet cartridges, it makes no difference if it is a propretory cartridge ... They have to buy from you! Does anyone else have the Optional Factory Rosewood Grips? Or are mine the only ones?

What are you guys using for brass? I'm always curious to know if folks are forming it from 41 Magnum or 30-30's. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I've been using 41mags in the contender barrel. Was having trouble using a 10mm auto sizing die, but stumbled on a set of orig herters dies and they work without an issue. For something a lil different, this is an OTT tapered barrel with brake in .401Powermag.
