... or would do the work, or even if it's possible... I have been thinking of having a compact custom 5 shot double action 45 Colt built... wondering if anyone knows or if it is even capable of fitting a 5 shot 45 colt cylinder & barrel to a Ruger GP-100 ( which I already own ) & fitting a snubbie barrel to the gun ... thinking it could make a great CCW gun thoughts or suggestions welcome

I am guessing the GP-100 is too small. Seems like it's pretty difficult to wedge 44 spl in, so I imagine that would make a 45 colt all but impossible. Of course all these things are relative to cost.

we had to open the frame window on the Single 10 to 8 shot 257 Special custom, that we recently completed... of course if the geometry just isn't there, it won't work...

anything above .44 special will be tight fit in the mid-size frames but maybe feasible. Have take peek and measure my 396ng when get home

Call David Clements... He does a 6 shot 10mm on the Ruger GP100 and at one time offered a 5 shot 44 Special. FWIW I'd think that a 6 shot 10mm revolver would be something nice to have in your hand when something goes bump in the night.

thanks for the suggestion... BTW... I have a 6" S&W 610, that shoots 40's & 10's... also had my chambers reamed to shoot 10 mag... love that gun, but it's not a compact fight'n gun though

A 610 is a larger frame revolver than the GP100. Think "N" frame vs. "L" frame.

had my local builder buddy over the other day, & we talked about a project like this... we did look at my GP-100, & there is no way that he feels 5 rounds of 45 colt could be stuffed into the cylinder, even if the barrel threads were machined bigger & slightly lower in the frame, he feels the rims would get to close to the ratchet... we also looked at my 396 ( or is it a 696 I can never keep the S&W model numbers straight ) anyway my scandium / titanium 5 shot 44 special... ( which is also an awesome CCW gun ) & those chamber walls are so thin, there's no way that if I found a stainless version, that he'd feel safe boring the chambers to 45 Colt, & the forcing cone is paper thin with the gun chambered in 44 special already ( I'd suspect that this gun would not hold up to 1,000's of rounds of range use, so I practice occasionally & carry often, with this gun )... it's looking like the Taurus Tracker in 45 Colt, looks like the best option right now... I'd like to have started with a "better quality gun" than the Taurus, since this will be a CCW gun, but I do own a couple Tauri that have been the base gun for customized range revolvers... & in reality, the CCW gun does not need to be a range gun, & have 1,000's of rounds shot through it, it just needs to be reliable enough, that it goes bang every time... still open for other suggestions...

I'm thinking that if I had the same idea stuck in my head I'd be talking to some gunsmiths.. Think I'd start with Jack Huntington. He seems to do some "out-of-the-box" stuff...

AXE...I know... but as a business person who does product development ( way different industry ) I hate to tie up these superb craftsmen with stupid questions about "would this be possible"... I'd rather know that things measure out, then see if they agree & would do it... takes up a lot less of their time.... BTW... usually Taurus mirrors another manufacturers frame sizes... is the Tracker equal the frame size of a existing S&W, Ruger or that I could have a 5 - 45 Colt cylinder fitted to BTW #2... I am so, not a wealthy man, just loves my guns, & can't have kids, so I have a little more spendable cash than a lot of others might

Those kids do soak up some cash! No empathy but lots of sympathy for those guys having kids while they are in their 20s. My one and only wasn't born until I was 44. All that said she is still expensive but the extra years on me helped me better understand what I had. 26 years in the work force positioned me fairly well too. She's about to turn 17 and I'll be 61. She is working on high school. I've completed two retirements and working on a 3rd. No custom revolver on the planet can hold a candle to her. Doesn't mean I don't still crave a new custom from time to time. Last count I think I had about 10 in work and 3 or 4 more in planning stages..

yep... wife's family can't have kids ( her or her sister ) & we are living on the family's "century farm" with no kids to leave it to... I'd gladly give up my collection, if she were able to have a child or two... since that's not happening, & we've gotten older ( too old to start now anyway ) I might as well buy another gun
