I have a problem with my 1917 rusting. The bluing on it is worn but not gone but still it rusts in no time. I have other, newer guns that had bluing wear that with stood rusting very well. So I have been wondering is modern steel better at resisting rust then older steel? I wanted to avoid re-bluing the 1917 but I may have no choice. I have made this my new house gun and keep it in a hidden draw so I may have to re blue to protect it.

It's been my experience it all rusts, even stainless, but the new stuff a little more nickel in it which would slow things down a bit.

What... if anything are you putting on it to protect the finish? Ive had exellent luck with Birchwood & Casey's Barricade. Green Turtle Wax works well also, although more involved to apply and buff off.

For a rust preventative I like Meguiar's Tech Wax liquid a lot, and it gets so shiny

I have used Rem oil for ever and has always worked well. Thats why I just cant figure out why this thing is rusting so easy.

You guys need to be careful using car wax for your firearms. some have solvents and a bad Ph that will eat into the metal longterm.
Just an FYI.

Sheath oil is good. Its supposed to lay down a layer of wax.

I just use an oily rag after I shoot them, and occassionally when I handle them at home. I have foud that if you get one of the treated gun socks they seem to work well as a preventative and are relatively inexpensive...if it's a humidity problem you may want to address that issue first.
You could always wrap an oily rag around it when you store it too.
I have never waxed a gun and probably never will.
