I have obtained a couple of Vaqueros..a 44 Mag and a 45 Colt New Vaquero. They both are hitting low/left, the NV being the worst. I'm thinking about dovetailing the front sight so I can control windage, but I don't really want a front sight that looks like I robbed it off my 1956 Marlin .22, anyone have options or photos and a smith to recommend? thanks!

Groo here Check Freedom Arms, they have a dovetail front sight in different sizes. For left right, check your grip/trigger control. Have other shooters try. If really bad the barrel needs turned in the frame. Find a local smith who works on Single actions.

Dustin Linebaugh tuned and dovetailed the front sight on this gun, I think it looks great for just looks and for how it works with my eyes as the original rounded front blades leaves much to be desired. It has 2 gold bars for long range shooting and I really like the sight...

If you are right handed, lighten the trigger before you do anything to left and right poi. You can try using just the tip of your trigger finger to see if it makes a difference in the shooting left issue. If not, there is always "tweaking the sight a bit to the left" As far as shooting low, that is easy to fix with a file..

I'm going to scrutinize my grip next time I go to shoot and see if I'm the culprit...

One thing I did to one of my Vaqueros that was shooting left,, (after it had been determined by more than a few shooters,) was to simply have a SMALL amount of the rear groove milled off. It opens up the rear sight channel, and if you center the front blade,, it shifts the POA. And as noted,, a bit of filing on the top of the front sight will raise the point of impact.

Fowler.... that is fine shooting.
The dovetail front sight is more in keeping with the target aesthetic implicit in the Bisley configuration. The person doing must know his business, lest with an inferior job, the sight fly off, etc. David Bradshaw

JWP475 it is a moderate load running about 1050fps, pleasant to shoot yet with a 335gr bullet hit with plenty of authority.

I know its not what you asked but, I have seen S&W jframe rear sights installed in the vaqueros, by Jack Huntington, pretty slick set up, and gives you the option of adjustable sights, but still maintaining the look.
I am sure somebody will post a photo up..

I am sure somebody will post a photo up.. This trick is done by pretty much all of the top smiths, a very nice option for some guns. Bowen has a fixed J-frame rear sight that can be fixed to a Vaquero so it is still as tough as a fixed sight but gives a target rear sight sight picture as well, often done with a white rear outline and a white center striped from blade. A very nice touch I must say...

I have one of the bowen sights on the Kings6 Model 58, its really nice... Here is another like Folwer's dovetailed front on a Vaquero with two gold bars....
