BTW... curmudgeon... I have my skunk getter I put together for a truck gun... it's a 44 Mag Hotshot barrel, that is now set up for 444 Marlin cases... I use the straight rifled choke tube for shot, & ball loads, in the 444 case loaded like brass shot shells ( get pretty good results loading loosely based recipes off 3" .410 shells ) & have some .375 soft lead round balls, can load 3 or 4 in a case... then can remove the choke tube, & load light loads using .429 bullets... 444 cases have had the headstamps obliterated, & the barrel was restamped 444 HL, & that's how I label my ammo... the Hotshot barrel was an interesting concept... using the 444 cases is something I wanted to do, as I don't currently reload conventional shot shells, & the cost of .410 shells is ridiculous the barrel has had a "base" added under, & wears a streamlight gun light & on the top wears a set of Williams fiber optic sights & a see through mount, with a laser... this was purpose built, to shoot farm critters, most often seen on the driveway or yard, coming home at night, after dark... BTW AXE... the 357 Herret I'm referring to, with the barrel stamping that allows the chambering to be covered up by a Weaver base, is a 10" bull barrel, which I would assume are newer profiles

I've been shooting Contenders since 1985, when I started out in IHMSA competition. Still shoot silhouettes at our local club, but I've sold a few of my Contender barrels recently. There are 3 frames and 9 barrels left, all of which I intend to keep. Most of my barrels are not displayed, but stored in the safe in Bore Stores. Keeps them from getting scratches and dings.

I started the IHMSA. Then a year later, was one of the original founders where the name was adopted. See history books.

David, I might have mentioned earlier that Warren designed it for the 22 LR, I suggested the 38/357. When I did the HOWDAH calibers I presented him with one in 500 Jurras. He was handed a dummy round with the gun and thought it was a lipstick tube. I spent many a happy hour at the plant with Warren and Ken French. Saw it grow from the 2 RF to what it became upto Ken's retirement. Haven't been in touch recently. A nice bunch but just not like the 60-70-and 80's... FWIW dept.

funny... I just saw correct headstamp brass available for this caliber, & have the 6mm & 7mm TCU's... started thinking about picking up ( or having made ) a 6.5 barrel... no eye deer how tough dies are to get... good luck in your search... the 6.5 aught to be easily as good or better at everything, that either the 6 or 7 could do...

6.5TCU dies are available, but I don't care to pay $100+ for them....used at that. I owned a 10" 6.5 barrel back in the 80's and won 3 state titles with it in IHMSA standing category..but sold it along with the dies..what a dumbass.

This is one heck of a thread (and a history lesson) whether you're a TC collector, "accumulator", shooter, or student of the history. How can you top "I started the IHMSA" or "then Elgin said"?
Lee and David (and all the rest), I appreciate your contributions to the forum and to the industry and sport. It doesn't get much better than this.
I own a few frames and barrels for the simple reason that when they were introduced and became popular, I couldn't afford one. One of those "one of these days" that Mr. Taffin writes about.
Thanks

Old buddy just made me trade for three Super 14 barrels. A 223, 30-30, and a 35 Remington... Never been a factory 14 fan but a deal is a deal and the 223 and 30-30 need to be a few more inches than 10.. The 35 just because I didn't have one.

AXE... I really like my Super 14 Hunter barrel in 35 Remington... you start playing with that one, & it'll move up to one of your favorites... one that surprised me the most, was my 375 Winchester barrel... that ones a monster... I didn't realize it was going to be up there ( handful wise ) as my 45-70 barrel

14" 222 JDJ 12" 45-70 10" 45 colt 10" 22 lr 10" 32-20 14" 50-70
The 50-70 is built for machine gun bullets, but shoots cast great. 600 grns at 700fps or so.
The 222 JDJ is a 222 mag worked over by JD. I know it's going to be hard to believe but I put 3 shots into .350" at 330yds one time. Normal groups are 2" to 4" at that range.
I got lucky that one time.
By the way the .350" group was fired with Nosler 2nds, imagine the group with 1st's?
Thanks
