My first contender experience was also my first 357 maximum experience. This frame dates to the 70s and the barrel being a factory max probably the 80s. I thought it was stainless when I first got it but after a lot of research I determined it was hard chrome, maybe from SSK since they aren’t far from me. I was super excited to find anything chambered in 357 maximum, this cartridge intrigued me from the first time I heard of it. So I got my new contender and load my first maximum rounds using H110 and the 180gr XTP. Set up at 25 yards not really sure what to expect. I’m not real good at shooting pistol from a bench for some reason so I wasn’t expecting much. My first group all the shots were touching, it seemed so surreal, they were basically stacked. This was my first time shooting scoped pistol too and I came to find out this has a lot to do with it. So that sent me down the rabbit hole. I knew I couldn’t alter the original configuration of my first contender and soon after I found a blued angry cat receiver with a 22LR barrel down my LGS for a decent price. That opened up the doors for more barrels and cheap ways to shoot new calibers I currently have barrels in 223, 357 max, 32 H&R, 10mm, 445 supermag plus 4 frames.
