How come they don't get much respect? Popular gunsmiths don't work on them. Owners don't praise them. What am I missing? thx Jim

They get a lot of respect around here. Our own Whitworth (who's an accomplished author) has done extensive testing with BFRs. His coverage has been positive, through both magazine articles and book form. And I can't speak for all gunsmiths but Jack Huntington works on them. In fact, his grip redesign is a very popular BFR upgrade. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I went to see my doctor... Doctor Vidi-boom-ba. Yeah...I told him once, "Doctor, every morning when I get up and look in the mirror I feel like throwing up. What's wrong with me? He said, "I don't know, but your eyesight is perfect." Rodney Dangerfield Ya there not very good guns, yes there strong and shoot really well but who wants traits like that in a gun? ;D Here's an old family photo of my BFR's

Aside of maybe a trigger job and sight work, they don't need much. Some like to change the grip around or shorten the barrel.
They are really pretty "good to go" out of the box and an AWESOME value when it comes to big bore revolvers, especially for hunting.

I sure like my .480 Ruger BFR, I get along fine with the grip and I lopped a couple inches off the barrel and it shoots like a houseafire! A fine gun.

Say what? I thought the OP was joking sarcastically. I've hardly ever run into anyone, in person or online, who isn't infatuated with their BFR. I agree with the others, mods or customizing a stock BFR just isn't necessary or practical. I think Whitworth summed it up best in his book by saying that a person would be hard pressed to find a better revolver in that price range - he suggested quite appropriately that BFR should stand for "Bang for the revenue".

Hey bigbores...I'm curious. What is the ivory handled BFR chambered for? It's obviously from the custom shop.

It's marked 45-70 but it came with a extra cylinder in 450M. I wish it had a 10" barrel to help burn all the powder.

Great guns, I believe as previously noted. My 475 received a trigger job and barrel chop and it is perfection IMO, if not a tad heavy that makes it pretty easy to shoot. I am more than pleased.

Hehee yeah, I used IMR 3031 once in my 7.5" bbl .45-70 and quickly decided that was a bad idea. If ya got guts, you can try 2400 in that .45-70 - as it comes in small doses and burns quicker than the other powders. I'm afraid to use it, but loading handbooks, both vintage and recent, still show 2400 loadings.

They'd get a lot more respect if they came with some grips and maybe in blued IMHO Here is my 475 that Clements shortened and Carl Schultz gripped. I'd love to have it coated in something that resembled a blue finish.

luv both my bfr's. 45-70 and 500S&W. all they needed was trigger jobs and grips. if buy another will be a JRH short barrel and will do a grip mod similiar to what jack does
