I was in the safe at my folks' looking at some stuff I haven't seen in a while, and started thinking.
When I was a kid I remember buying and reading every issue of three of his publications: Guns and Ammo, Car Craft, and Hot Rod Magazine which inspired me to buy a 1970 Pontiac GTO with a Ram Air IV 400 and build a 415 small block with a buddy for his 1973 Nova as well as the purchase of way too many guns. My first gun was a Blackhawk from my Dad for Christmas, which started my lifelong interest in firearms. I also frequently read Motor Trend and Rod and Custom, as well as Motorcyclist.
I remember being in awe that Petersen successfully hunted a polar bear with a Smith model 29. Even though I had a 45 Blackhawk, I remember thinking how powerful a 44 magnum was because of Pertersen's bear. I saw that bear in the bottom level lobby of his building on La Cienega and Sunset Boulevards in LA. It was huge. No idea where it is now.
When Robert E. Peterson died, I was at the law firm that handled much of the processing of his extensive gun collection. There was a big book with all the listings in it, and I remember seeing many historical pieces in the collection, it was fascinating. I wasted several hours of several billable days pouring over it for my own purposes. Many items were donated to the NRA who was also our client for regulatory work and for successful litigation against unconstitutional gun laws. I felt we were doing the Almighty's bidding. I also got to see a list of John Wayne's collection. I have seen 4473s that he filled out.
I think there are members here who are going to have a book like that. I bet some here may have known him.
