It's the phase of the moon.
I have Bowens that are and some that aren't. Hamilton says sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't unless the customer specifies which they want.

One thing that recessed caseheads provide is support in the event you do not load a full cylinder - i.e. just load a single round and fire. the cylinder is still evenly supported, just as it would be on a non-recessed cylinder fully loaded, whether with live ammo or empties. Tim

Tim ***** Recoil of big bore rounds----yes. the .44 Magnum is a big bore revolver cartridge----whips the loading gate forward on its hinge. During the years I poured .44 Mags through Ruger single actions----old model with counterbored chambers, and New Models with exposed rims----I never broke a loading gate. Broke a loading gate on a Freedom Arms Model 83 .44 Mag, with recessed rims. In the case of the New Model Super Blackhawk in handgun silhouette, the competitor loads five rounds, which always leaves your loading gate unsupported on the first shot. The next 4 rounds are fired with a spent case cushioning the loading gate. For every 5,000 rounds fired, the loading gate is unsupported on 1,000 shots. Recoil earns a new definition in .454 Casull, .475 & .500 Linebaugh, etc. David Bradshaw

When I come back for a visit, I’d like to see this one. That is a nice shooter with clean lines

***** Tom.... shooting off a bench in Louisiana. Loading gate didn’t go flying, it fell right beside the Model 83. May late friend and super precise TIG maestro Bill Mading welded it back together. That was around 2000 and it’s been fine since. Yes, the chambers are counterbored for .44 rims. David Bradshaw
