The important thing is to note that there are no rights or wrongs here.. All the options and variations really open the door to running up on customs that are somewhat unique on a regular basis...
Don't think we've responded to " How does it affect opening the reloading gate?" No significant difference IMHO...

Thanks for all the pics! There are some gorgeous sixguns in this thread. I really like the look of the scalloping; think I'll go with it for this project.

This is an old model 41 shorty that we did the light weight stuff to. Left the AL grip frame, scallops, ports and Dall sheep grips then Robars Np3 coating. Compliments of Mr. Bowen again.

I had it done on two of my builds, mostly because I like the look. Their is some benefit to weight, but no negatives that I've run into. BTW - I had my work done at Turnbull and, depending on what you are having done, for me the price was more attractive.

I like the look. I also like the weight reduction concept however that makes more sense on an aluminum grip framed short barrel 41 special than a large frame Bisley. Each time I look at a bare Bisley grip frame I think it looks like it could use to go on a diet!

JG has done a few for me including this 41. I think the weight savings is negligible but I like the looks. Killed a doe with it last weekend. I love that LWT SAA. Did Turnbull do all the work?

A lot of weight may be removed from the steel Ruger grip frames by removing most of the webbing. A drill and files will get rid of most.
